CALL FOR POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWS
Launched in early 2017, the new MIT Project on Technology, the Economy, and National Security (TENS) — part of the MIT Internet Policy Research Initiative (IPRI) — is seeking talented postgraduate students to join us this summer. We plan to welcome students from a variety of backgrounds to join our community and write on the most pressing issues in domestic and international technology policy.
Postgraduate Research Fellows will have the opportunity to both develop their own scholarship and contribute to TENS and IPRI’s work in a collaborative environment of researchers and practitioners.
Independent research project(s), developed during the admissions process with TENS leadership, will form the core of the Fellow’s effort and should be completed and ready for publication by the end of the summer. Projects may take the form of a journal article, in-depth report, long-form commentary for a major online publication, or book. It should fall in one of the broad areas of IPRI’s current research interest, including but not limited to:
• International Relations of Cybersecurity
• International Cyber Law & Norms
• Implications of Artificial Intelligence
• Digital Frontiers in National Security
• Privacy Policy (Domestic or Int’l)
• Automation and Job Loss
• Algorithmic Accountability/Data Ethics
• Surveillance and Civil Liberties
In addition, Fellows may be invited to contribute short-form policy commentary to online publications of interest. Such writings are designed to encourage Researchers to engage in new areas of interest within broad TENS research fields and deepen their thinking on issues beyond their previous publications to- date. Finally, Fellows should expect the opportunity to engage the policy community through a number of convening opportunities under TENS and/or IPRI auspices planned throughout the year.
All postgraduate disciplines are encouraged to apply, including, inter alia, technology; law; public policy/administration; international relations; economics; business; and journalism. Affiliates may be non-resident, subject to discussion with program leadership and commitment to virtual participation in Initiative-wide discussions. Modest funding may be available to Fellows lacking alternative support.
To apply, please send a CV, cover letter including proposed independent research project, short-form and long-form writing samples, and contact details for three references (one academic) to the address below.
Submit applications (or further questions) to: IPRI-TENS-Summer at mit.edu<mailto:IPRI-TENS-Summer at mit.edu> Applications for fellowships beginning Summer 2017 will be accepted through May 20.
