Application deadline is February 1, 2015. UCLA is an AA/EOE.

The UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics (ISG) is recruiting a post-doctoral scholar as part of an NSF-funded research project (Grant #1322299) on public participation in science and technology. The one-year position (renewable for one additional year pending positive review) is for a researcher who can engage in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis exploring the changing role of participation by publics and citizens in science, engineering and technology. We encourage applicants from fields in the social sciences and humanities, Candidates with experience in the life sciences are encouraged to apply.

Candidates will be expected to actively participate in the life of the Institute: to attend the scheduled ISG fellows’ meetings and make at least one formal presentation; to teach one class per year in the Human Biology and Society majors (can be cross-listed with another major). Candidates are also expected to publish scholarly research and collaborate with the Co-PIs on the NSF-funded project in producing publications and research materials (e.g. case studies, ethnography, historical material, statistical data) for use in understanding some aspect of participation.

The salary for each position is competitive and includes health insurance, plus a $1500 stipend for conference fees, travel, research equipment/supplies, and other approved research-related expenses. Salary will be determined based on experience and percent time of the position. Candidates should contact Christopher Kelty (ckelty at ucla.edu<mailto:ckelty at ucla.edu>) or Aaron Panofsky (apanofsky at socgen.ucla.edu<mailto:apanofsky at socgen.ucla.edu>) directly with questions. Eligibility: Applicants who received the Ph.D. degree after September 2010, or who will complete all requirements (including filing the dissertation) by June 30, 2015, are eligible to apply.

To apply, submit electronically in PDF format: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, research statement, writing sample, and the names and addresses of three references to ISG Manager Ana Wevillana at socgen.ucla.edu<mailto:ana at socgen.ucla.edu> (please indicate ‘ISG NSF Postdoc’ in the subject line). The letter of application should include an explanation of the candidate’s research experience and interest in the topic, methodological orientation and skills, and a description of possible courses the candidate could teach in the Institute.
