Professor Craig Wilder
Head, History Faculty
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Dear Professor Wilder:
I write to inquire whether you or your colleagues have a recent Ph.D. or an advanced graduate student who might wish to gain teaching experience by teaching our modern European survey this coming semester. I hope you will disseminate the following information to your potential candidates and their mentors in European history.
The course would be HIST 114, Europe from Napoleon to the EU. It is an introductory survey, usually taken by first-, second-, or third-year students, both majors and non-majors. It is also a great feeder course into the major. The course is currently in the spring schedule for MWF at noon. Some flexibility may be possible, but we hope to retain this time, as preregistration is already underway. It is also very possible that the appointment could be extended and filled out next year (although we will not know that until later).
Holy Cross is a highly ranked liberal arts college in Worcester. The History department includes 19 full-time faculty, with active research agendas that span the globe. The class would have 19 students. Salary would be in the neighborhood of $5900.
We welcome indications of interest from applicants, to be followed as soon as possible by the following materials, most conveniently via email attachments to me:
(1) a cover letter;
(2) a dissertation abstract or other piece of scholarly writing;
(3) a teaching statement;
(4) 2 letters of recommendation;
(5) graduate transcript (unofficial for now--official if hired).
Due to time constraints, we will be moving forward quite promptly to interview.
We would be very grateful for your help in spreading the word!
With best wishes,
Noel Cary
Professor and Chair
