MIT STS Graduate Program and Karen Gardner,

The Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track. Please distribute the below position announcement to appropriate graduate student/recent graduate student listings. Thanks!

Assistant or Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, Department of Engineering and Society (E&S), School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), University of Virginia. The Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) in the Department of Engineering and Society ( http://www.eands.virginia.edu/eands/) is seeking an outstanding scholar who studies science, technology, and engineering. Applicants should be from the History of Technology, Science, Technology, and Society, or other humanistic/social science fields concentrating on understanding technology. Research specialties could include the design of sociotechnical systems, innovation and entrepreneurship, future studies, engineering leadership, the environment and sustainability, big data, or the social dynamics of the professions, among other topics.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, since STS teaches across the core curriculum for undergraduate engineers. Instruction in writing and other communications skills is one key concern in that coursework. The hire will play a prominent role in the programs that E&S provides to SEAS (such as the undergraduate thesis, engineering business, or the policy internship) as well as building connections to other departments in the Engineering School and the University.

We welcome candidates who have recently received their doctorates (must have degree in hand at the time of application) as well as those with more teaching or research experience. The position is tenure-track, and candidates who have reached the rank of associate professor will be considered for tenure at the start of their appointment. The salary is commensurate to experience and will commence Fall 2015.

Applicants must submit a cover letter outlining both research interests and their approaches to teaching in the STS curriculum at SEAS. Applicants should also provide a curriculum vitae, a sample of written work, and contact information of three references. Send all materials to https://jobs.virginia.edu<https://jobs.virginia.edu/> under Posting Number 0615564. We will begin reviewing applications on 15 February 2015 and will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.

The University of Virginia is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to developing diversity in faculty and welcomes applications from women, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
