1. 2010 Mother Board Writing Prize
This prize is an annual award honoring graduate student research and
writing in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies. This writing
prize is dedicated to the ‘Mother Board’, the seven feminist
intellectuals who together conceptualized and brought the Graduate
Consortium in Women’s Studies into existence in 1988.
One student will be recognized each year with an award for unpublished
written work that exemplifies the three tenets central to the GCWS
mission: interdisciplinary inquiry; innovative thinking; and
epistemologically self-conscious investigation. Students who are
eligible are those currently matriculated in a Masters or Doctorate
program at one of the nine GCWS member institutions and who have been
or are currently enrolled in a GCWS seminar. Papers need not have been
written for a GCWS course. Submissions will be reviewed by a 2-person
selection committee of GCWS affiliated faculty. The award of the
writing prize will be announced towards the end of the Spring semester.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- Three hard copies of the submission (maximum 30 single-sided, double-
spaced pages)
- Completed Mother Board Writing Prize submission form (attached)
- Curriculum vita (with current address)
- Confirmation of past or current enrollment in a GCWS course (Print
copy of a grade transcript, email or letter of confirmation signed by
the GCWS Program Coordinator)
Submission packets should be postmarked April 15, 2010, and mailed to:

Naturally Obsessed: the making of a scientist: a one-hour documentary
film from PARNASSUSWORKS: Produced and Directed by Richard Rifkind and
Carole Rifkind
A true story about the struggle to become a scientist and the
satisfactions of discovery.
Watch a one-minute prelude to the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7zIRl0quLw
(January 16, 2009) “Most films show working scientists as lonely
isolates, pathetic nerds, dangerous nuts, or pompous gurus. Viewers of
Naturally Obsessed experience the world of research as it really is –
a lively community of intensely curious, friendly and hardworking
individuals engaged in the fascinating process of scientific
discovery,” says scientist turned filmmaker, Sloan Kettering Institute
Chairman Emeritus, Richard Rifkind.
Mixing humor with heartbreak, NATURALLY OBSESSED: THE MAKING OF A
SCIENTIST tells an intensely dramatic story about a trio of
irrepressible student scientists who are guided through the emotional
ups and downs of a PhD training program by a tough but genial mentor.
The film was shot for over three years in the Molecular Biology
laboratory of Dr. Lawrence Shapiro at Columbia University Medical
Center in New York City.
