Where: Bush Room (off of Lobby 10 at MIT)
Professor Bevin Engelward, PhD
"The DNA Damage-Cancer Connection"
In order to prevent or cure cancer, scientists and physicians must
first understand what causes cancer. We know that mutations cause
cancer, but where do mutations come from? Are some of us more
susceptible than others?
Dr. Engelward will present an overview of the relationship between DNA
damage and the mutations that cause cancer. She will discuss how DNA
can be damaged, how it can be repaired by a suite of enzymes, and how
our bodies cope with situations where there is excessive DNA damage.
Importantly, knowledge of what causes mutations gives us clues about
how to prevent them.
Dr. Engelward will share with you the latest insights into the DNA
damage-Cancer connection and will also describe some of the recent
innovations in her own laboratory. Her own work includes the creation
of genetically engineered animals in which mutant cells can be
monitored by a fluorescent readout, and the application of computer
chip technology for creating new tools to measure DNA damage in humans.
Registration 6:30pm
Seminar 7:00 - 8:00pm
Networking 8:00 - 9:00pm
A light dinner will be served.
Prof. Bevin Engelward graduated from Yale University in 1988 and from
Harvard School of Public Health in 1996. She began her faculty
position at MIT in 1997. Her laboratory has produced novel
technologies for studying DNA damage and repair, and these tools are
being applied to environmental health problems both in the US and
abroad. Prof. Engelward is currently an Associate Professor in the MIT
Department of Biological Engineering.
