Description: SIAM Student seminars are back! Join us for a talk by Mohammed Amine Bennouna and Moise J Blanchard (Graduate Students, ORC, MIT) on "Approximating Koborov Functions with Neural Networks".
When: Thursday, December 17th, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM EDT

Meeting ID: 964 8741 1537

Abstract: In this work, we analyze the number of neurons and training parameters a neural networks needs to approximate multivariate functions of bounded second mixed derivatives --- Koborov functions. We prove upper bounds on these quantities for shallow and deep neural networks breaking the curse of dimensionality. Our bounds hold for general activation functions, including ReLU. We further prove that these bounds nearly match the minimal number of parameters any continuous function approximator needs to approximate Koborov functions, showing that neural networks are near-optimal function approximators.
About MIT SIAM:
The MIT SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) student chapter is devoted to cross-pollinating ideas in applied mathematics and computational engineering between students and researchers at MIT that wouldn’t otherwise collaborate.
