Dear fellow off-campus graduate students,
We just bulk-subscribed a list of 1471 graduate students that the
registrar's office says now live off-campus. Welcome to the GSC Housing and
Community Affairs (HCA) Off-Campus subcommittee e-mailing list.
- This is a low-traffic list, (max 2 times per month)
- We organize and announce social events to build community for graduate
students who live off-campus. Think of it as an analogue for social events
held in the dorms.
- Our events are free or heavily subsidized
- It is a way for you to let us know about safety, community and
transportation issues you (and your family face) by living off-campus.
- You can plan events, and we'll pay
- We organize and welcome family and child friendly events. Spouses and
significant others are almost always welcome (we pay for them too!)
Below are details for this round of events/announcements. If you want to
organize a social event, and want us to pay for it (and guarantee you get a
spot), get in touch with us (kcedrone at mit.edu, kastoerz at mit.edu,
gsc-hca-offcampus-chair at mit.edu). In general, anything social (dinner,
kayaking, go-karting not movies) and food and drink (no alcohol) are good
to go.
Finally, if you don't like the sound of free food, free events, and
off-campus community, you can unsubscribe to this free and amazing list by
visiting: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/gsc-hca-offcampus
Hope to see you at an event soon!
Your GSC off-campus reps,
Kevin Cedrone and Kelsey Stoerzinger

6. Anno: New Spouses&Partners website
When: N/A
Where: N/A
Contact: Jennifer Recklet Tassi (Reck at med.mit.edu)
RSVP: N/A
Description: MIT spouses&partners has a new website, a new poster
advertising campaign, and new opportunities for any newcomer to connect
with the MIT community. Let’s just say it’s been a busy summer!
Our new website, http://spouses.mit.edu, will go live today. We’re
excited about several features that make it more personal and welcoming for
newcomers:
· Integration with our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn), to allow newcomers to connect with people right away on MIT
FamilyNet, our online community, and at our new neighborhood events.
· The updated and streamlined Newcomers’ Guide and an International
Newcomers section that has tons of resources for English language learners,
including the MIT Language Conversation Exchange
· A Meet the Members page, where newcomers can contact a volunteer
who speaks their language or lives in their neighborhood.
Please help newcomers and their families find our resources by updating
your links to our site. We appreciate your help!
If you’ve shared our printed materials in the past, expect to receive our
new posters this week. We would love your help in displaying our posters
in a prominent place on campus throughout the year, because new families
arrive all year, not just during orientation. If you’re interested in
receiving materials from us for the first time, please let us know! And
thanks for helping us support families in transition.
We hope that our poster and web outreach will allow us to reduce our
dependence on disposable handouts, but if you need something solid to hang
on to, we also have some postcards available.
MIT spouses&partners is also involved in several new orientation and
welcome events for the whole MIT community.
· An English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Information Fair in
partnership with the Graduate Student Council (GSC).
· Neighborhood welcome events, so that off-campus newcomers can
have local opportunities to connect with the MIT community.
These events and many others are open to the whole MIT community, and
posted on our calendar, the main MIT event calendar, our Facebook group and
MIT Familynet, our online community for MIT families. We’ve attached a
printable list of orientation events we are hosting or participating in,
which you are welcome to distribute.
Thanks for the part you play in making MIT a welcoming place for families.
Best,
Jennifer
P.S. Don’t forget to save the date for our 40th anniversary celebration on
Thursday November 1 at 7 p.m. in the Bush Room – we hope you can join us!
