Dear Fellow off-campus students,
Kelsey and I have a few events and announcements to pass on to you. One of
the most important is the GSC Family Survey:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEc3LURHNjA2d3BNZ0ZVNmxLMl9IUVE6MQ#gid=0
Please take a few minutes to fill it out. The GSC is forming a family
subcommittee. Get in touch with the HCA chairs and read item 3 below for
more detail. (gsc-hca at mit.edu)
If you want to plan an event, party or activity to improve the off-campus
community, we will help pay for and/or publicize it. If you organize
something, you're guaranteed a spot.
Finally, if you have any safety, transportation or community concern for
you or your family living off-campus please let us know.
Your friendly neighbourhood off-campus reps,
Kevin Cedrone and Kelsey Stoerzinger

4. Grad Student Life Grants: Apply for 2013 funding!
When: Submit by Oct. 26, midnight
Where: Online
Contact: gslg at mit.edu
RSVP: http://web.mit.edu/gslg
Description: Chances are you've gotten this email from us before -- this is
just to remind you all of upcoming deadlines for Graduate Student Life
Grants in the ODGE. This year, we are shifting the proposal deadline
forward, as you may have noticed from ads around campus: the new deadline
is October 26 at midnight. This way, decisions can be made by the end of the
semester and awarded funds should become available during IAP (as opposed
to mid-spring).
Every year, we receive great proposals from graduate student groups and
communities, and we are hoping that this year will be no different. Keep in
mind that grant money must be separate from the funds you might receive
from ASA: it cannot go toward the general functioning of your club or
group. However, it can absolutely be used towards hosting events, projects,
and series that are open to the wider MIT graduate community. Cultural
cooking classes, barbecues, lecture series, art exhibits... GSLG projects
have taken many forms over the years! Two or more groups can also
collaborate on a proposal - this is very much encouraged!
Note that living communities are welcome to submit proposals that are
primarily intended for their own residents (such as family-oriented events
for the Westgate and Eastgate communities).
Some successful examples from last year:
LGBT game night (Lutheran Episcopal Ministry)
Art and Ocean Exchange: an experiment in communicating science through art
(WHOI)
Monday Night Sports at the Thirsty Ear (TEEC)
Sidney-Pacific 10th Anniversary Alumni Weekend
As always, you can find lists of past projects, informations, and the
required template for proposal submission at web.mit.edu/gslg. And if you
know of any grad students, grad student spouses, or administrators who you
think might have a great idea for a GSLG grant project, please pass this
email along to them! You are also welcome to apply as an individual: it is
not necessary for a project to be proposed on behalf of a student group.
For those of you not familiar with the GSLG process, here's a basic rundown
of how it works:
1. You submit your proposal using the template on the website via email to
gslg at mit.edu before Oct 27
2. Over the month of November, the GSLG coordinators and a carefully
selected panel of grad students and admins review the proposals.
3. If we have any questions, we will contact the proposal authors, and your
answers will be communicated to the panel members.
4. In December, the panel's final recommendations are made and forwarded to
Dean Ortiz.
So, keep in mind that if there are issues with the project you propose, the
GSLG panel will do everything they can to work with you to make it into a
successful proposal. Projects are rarely declined outright, so please
consider applying even if you are uncertain about some aspects of the
proposal or about the final form you want your project to take. You are
also very welcome to email us or request a sit-down meeting to discuss ways
to form a successful proposal.
Feel free to email us at gslg at mit.edu if you have any additional questions!
Very best,
Sara Ferry
Graduate Community Fellow for GSLG
