Hi all,

As some of you know, MIT is in the process of requesting Cambridge up-zone areas around Kendall Square. The projects that will take place in the up-zoned areas over the next decade will have a dramatic effect on MIT and the area immediately around it. There has been heated debate about the contents of the petition, from within MIT, and outside the Institute.

Tomorrow, the GSC, UA, and PA are hosting a public forum for students to come hear from MIT administrators, faculty, and staff about the petition. There will be discussion and question periods. If you care about the future of Kendall Square or MIT, or are just curious about Cambridge development plans, I highly recommend you attend.

Info is below. The forum will follow the regularly schedule GSC General Council Meeting (food for that, 5PM, business at 5:30PM).

Best,
Nathaniel Schafheimer
HCA Co-Chair

Very few projects in MIT's history have proposed to reshape the immediate campus more than MIT's currently filed rezoning petition before the Cambridge City Council. In addition to proposing three new commercial buildings between MIT Medical and Sloan, it aims to create a new Eastern Gateway to the campus, bring new retail to Kendall Square, and deliver additional housing along Main Street.

As members and stakeholders of this campus, we believe students (UG and G) and postdoctoral researchers should be informed of the specifics of this proposal, hear the opinions on both side of this debated topic, and have the chance to arrive at their own opinions.

As the discussion continues at the City Council, students and postdocs have a very real role to play in articulating their views as members of MIT and residents of Cambridge and Greater Boston. Please join us on February 6th to learn more and offer your feedback
