"The Light at the End of the Tunnel: How Doctoral Students Succeed."
Date: Oct 20th 2006 (Friday)
Time: 3.30-5pm
Venue: 34-101
This seminar will present the initial findings of a longitudinal
research project being conducted at Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and at Oregon State University. Sixty PhD students in math,
physics and chemistry shared their perspectives on factors which assist
them in persisting to degree completion. Findings may inform such
faculty roles as advising and mentoring, selection and retention of
students, and implications for program culture. Findings may also help
graduate student in identifying what they need to succeed. Particularly
salient aspects of the graduate experience from the students'
perspectives such as tenure status of advisor, source of funding, the
process of qualifying exams, professional integration, and pre-grad
school activities and motivations will also be discussed. Faculty,
student and administration reactions and perspectives will be sought to
further benefit this research.
