*GSC Elections 2006*

Dear Graduate Students,

Elections of the 2006-2007 Executive Committee Chairs of the Graduate Student Council (GSC) will take place over the month of March 2006, and the elections of the 2006-2007 Officers of the GSC will take place at the General Council Meeting (GCM) to be held on April 5th, 2006, starting at 5:00 pm in Room 4-163.

All members of the Graduate Student Body as designated in the GSC Constitution and Bylaws are eligible as candidates for all positions.

Nominations for Officers positions will start at the March GCM, on March 1st
2006, 5pm, and close on March 29th 2006 at 5pm.

In order to get voting privileges for the Officers Elections, new GSC Reps must submit their application by March 1st 2006, 5pm.

All questions and comments should be directed to gsc-vice-president at mit.edu. For more information, please visit the GSC Elections website at:
http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/elections/elections2006.shtml

If you have any questions regarding the duties of the Committee Chairs and Officers, please see the descriptions as listed on the GSC website:
http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/about/committees/
http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/about/officers/

I urge all current Council Representatives to make sure any remaining open seats in their Department, Dorm, etc... are filled so as to assure that the needs of their constituencies are properly represented at the Election. Council Representatives, as the official representatives of the graduate student community at MIT, have the duty to elect Officers who will cast personal agendas aside and best represent the interests and edicts of the Graduate Student Body to the Administration of MIT.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and I hope to see many of you at the events preceding the election.

Sylvain Bruni
Graduate Student Council President
Election Officer

*GSC Awards*
For more info, please visit: http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/awards/

Each year, the Graduate Student Council gives input in the decision-making
process of four Institute Awards, to be presented at the Institute Awards
Convocation in May. The 2006<http://web.mit.edu/awards/> Awards Convocation
will be held on May 9 at 4:00 p.m. in 10-250 . All are welcome to attend. A
reception will follow the ceremony in Lobby 10.

The four GSC Institute Awards are:
*<http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/awards/#GraduateTeachingAward> Graduate Teaching Awards (for each school)
    * <http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/awards/#PerkinsAward> Frank E. Perkins Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising
    * <http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/awards/#HortonAward> Edward L. Horton Fellowship Award
    * <http://web.mit.edu/gsc/www/programs/awards/#SizerAward> Irwin Sizer Award for Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education.

GSC Award decisions will not be notified before the Awards Ceremony. Please do not email inquiring about recipients. We encourage all of you to attend the ceremony with your nominee.

Nomination of students and faculty for these awards offer a unique opportunity to honor these individuals for their invaluable contributions to graduate students and to thank them for their efforts. A complete nomination requires a supporting statement not to exceed one page or 500 words. Although there are no hard and fast guidelines, a strong nomination is likely to include high quality statement clearly describing relevant accomplishments, any specific task, and/or incidents reflecting nominee's dedication and genuine interest. The number of nominations, particularly from different individuals (students and faculty), each candidate receives also reflects the strength.
