Dear Friends of the MIT Glass Lab,

We are writing to tell you about some exciting developments in our ongoing
quest to renovate the Glass Lab and expand the program so that we can offer
more glass blowing classes to more people. As many of you know, the
beginning glass blowing class is the most oversubscribed class at MIT. The
great news is that the space for a renovated and expanded Glass Lab has
been identified!

A feasibility study authorized by the Committee for Review of Space
Planning (CRSP) was completed this fall.
Detailed plans and cost estimates were completed by architectural firm
Imai, Keller and Moore and Turner Construction Company. The result has
given us a clear picture of the future Glass Lab.

The plan is this: both the Glass Lab and the metal forge would both benefit
from entirely renovated spaces. The Glass Lab would stay in room 4-003 and
add another two work stations at the west end of the lab, and the forge
would move directly across the hall to a space created by joining two
existing adjacent rooms.

What’s exciting about this opportunity is that it not only gives us the
chance to double the number of students who can take glass blowing classes,
but it also enables us to make some very basic and important physical
changes, such as:

   - Install an air-handling system that is actually designed for our needs
   - Design and build smaller, more versatile and energy-efficient
   equipment using new materials and control technologies;
   - Create a modern floor-to-ceiling glass wall between the Infinite
   Corridor and the Glass Lab so that passers-by can get a much better look at
   the glass blowing experience;
   - The hallway between the Glass Lab and metal forge rooms will be
   renovated to create a light filled and art inspired space.

We have authorization to expand the space. We have identified the costs.
The time to act is now!

The Glass Lab community includes many people: MIT students, staff and
faculty who have taken classes, instructors, parents, volunteers and
attendees of the MIT Great Glass Pumpkin Patch and the Hazlegrove Lecture,
and anybody who has ever bought a piece of glass in Lobby 10. This
community has thus far been able to raise about $400,000 toward our goal of
$1.9 million. Now that the plan is in place, please take a minute to look
at the drawings below prepared by our project architects and consider
making a donation that will help this plan become a reality.
