Featured Artist: Hilary McHugh

"I have been a working artist for 20 years, the last
eleven of those exclusively working with glass,
mostly blown glass. My glass artwork is inspired by
nature and my interest in form and design.

Working with molten glass at a temperature of 2100
degrees gives me the opportunity to incorporate
many aspects of my life directly into the process of
blowing glass: physicality, spontaneity, flexibility, and
fluidity.

Molten glass often insists upon an immediate and
direct response, and it requires your full attention.
For instance,

* if you allow your glass piece to get too cold it will
break;

* if you overheat the piece it will collapse into a
puddle of glass on the floor.

The challenge and versatility of working with molten
glass is what holds my interest and keeps me
focused and engaged while working with this magical
medium."

Hilary McHugh was born in 1963 in Washington, D.C.
She is a glass artist and instructor working in Boston.
She received her BFA from The Massachusetts
College of Art and also completed her graduate
teaching certificate there. She studied with
renowned glass artists at the Corning Museum and
Pilchuck Glass School. She has successfully
completed several private commissions. Her work
can be found in galleries and fine craft stores
throughout the Northeast.
