Summer UROP: Multiplayer Online Game Programming

Department/Program: MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program
Faculty Supervisor: Prof. Eric Klopfer
Direct Supervisor: Jason Haas

We're creating a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game for STEM education, and we need your help with the multiplayer portion!

Position: Multiplayer Developer
This position requires a coder with serious skills to implement multiplayer structures. Qualifications include prior experience in projects with client-server communication, web services, or any multiplayer project. Prior development of web applications would also be relevant.

Background: Our group has had widespread success with multiplayer online games such as Vanished (vanished.mit.edu<http://vanished.mit.edu/>), which drew thousands of users. In order to extend that work, we secured a large grant from the Gates Foundation to make an MMORPG (think World of Warcraft) for educating around topics in high school mathematics and biology. The design for the single player experience has made tremendous progress, but a major design challenge for this summer is to consider what structures the game needs in order to support meaningful multiuser play. By the end of the summer, we hope to have one or more working prototypes of these multiplayer structures.

Commitment: 15-40 hrs/week during the summer (mostly in lab during business hours), with the option to continue less intensely into fall

Type: Credit or Pay

If interested, please send an email to Jason (jhaas at mit.edu<mailto:djwendel at mit.edu>) and Prof. Klopfer (tep-jobs at mit.edu<mailto:tep-jobs at mit.edu>) containing:
- - a current resume if available, and/or a brief description of relevant interests and experience
- - an estimate of your summer availability (number of weeks and hrs/week)
- - a few times next week when you're available for a 20-minute interview

This is an opportunity to contribute to a major project in a fast-paced, collaborative, and fun work environment.
We hope you'll consider joining us!
