Thanks for your response. I have experimented with the code and 
have come to the following conclusions.

1  Yes the mm -1 command line argument will minimize the 
function.

2  the command ga.minimaxi(-1) will also set the code to minimize.

3  the ga.minimize() command as given in the example nor the 
ga.maximize() command seem to have absolutly any effect! (on my 
system)
