Dear Friends of the Arts,
In his 25th year, in his freshly created critical journal, Robert Schumann
declared:
Über manche Sachen auf der Welt läßt sich gar nichts sagen, z.B. über die
> C-dur-Sinfonie mit Fuge von Mozart, über vieles von Shakespeare, über
> einzelnes von Beethoven.
>
(*Neue Zeitschrift für Musik*, February 6, 1835)
That's right. Like the pound-sign at the end of a chess game or the Halmos
square at the end of a proof, Mozart's last symphony simply ends the
discussion: you must come hear it at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Let's
make this an event, next Thursday, March 14. As usual, RSVP here for the
pre-game dinner:

Food in 2-290 at 6pm.
Concert at Symphony Hall at 8pm.
They're also playing a new cello concerto by Augusta Read Thomas, and
Saint-Saëns' third symphony.
(Please remember to pick up your college card tickets beforehand. And, if
you haven't already got one, the college card tickets can be bought in
11-004 for $5.)
See you soon!
