MITei Natural Gas Study¹s Speaker Series
³Unconventional Gas: Resource and Technology Needs²
Speaker: Kent Perry
Friday, February 20, 2009
2-4pm
E19-319
50 Ames Street

Abstract

The presentation will provide a brief history of unconventional gas
development and a more in depth review of the current unconventional gas
resource; size, location and technical issues.

The current technology capability for developing this resource will be
described, as well as the ongoing research in this area and requirements for
future development.

Technology topic areas will focus on well drilling and completion including
hydraulic fracturing, environmental concerns, produced water and water usage
issues, formation evaluation and geologic issues including the importance of
natural fractures.

Existing research programs in this area and potential research opportunities
will also be identified.

Kent Perry Bio
Kent Perry, director of Exploration & Production Research at the Gas
Technology Institute in Des Plaines, IL, is responsible for planning and
managing research with the objective of developing new technology for
enhanced recovery of unconventional natural gas in the lower 48 states.

Perry has 30 years¹ experience including gas storage engineering for
Northern Illinois Gas Co., production engineering with Kansas-Nebraska
Natural Gas Co., and exploration and production for Michigan Energy
Resources Co.

He holds a BS in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
Perry is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and a past SPE
Distinguished Lecturer on the topic of tight gas sands in the US.

He has participated in National Petroleum Council studies and has authored
several papers on low permeability natural gas resources and hydraulic
fracturing.
