Several times a day, every day of the year, where a winding road
crosses the equator just north of Nairobi, Kenya, wealthy tourists
join a poignant tribute to science, a demonstration of the magical
Coriolisforce. It is a ritual to Africans, a scientific experiment
to tourists, and a hoax to the scientists who express their outrage
on the Web. All commit errors, the same mistakes plaguing
discussions of global warming. Correcting them is a challenge,
especially in South Africa, land of affluence and abject poverty.
