"Technology Innovation in Deepwater Oil and Gas Exploration and
Development"
Richard Sears, Vice President, Exploration and Deep Water Technical
Evaluation, Royal Dutch Shell
Wednesday November 1, 2006 6:00-7:00pm
 E51-149 (Tang Center)

Abstract
Deepwaters around the world (>500m water depth) have been the focus of
significant exploration and development activities over the last 20
years. The result has been exploration discoveries in excess of 80
billion barrels of oil equivalent, with a similar volume of undiscovered
potential. While there are dozens of deepwater fields currently in
production, with many more under development, it is still an immature
environment when you consider the full potential and lifecycle. This
talk will look at the current state of deepwater oil and gas
development, the technologies that enable today's projects, and the
areas where significant new technologies are needed in order to realize
the full potential of the deepwater opportunity. We will also look at
quantitative examples of the ability of technology to create value.

Biography
Richard Sears received degrees in Physics and Geophysics from Stanford
and joined Shell as a geophysicist in 1976. Since that time he has been
involved in and has led oil and gas exploration ventures throughout the
lower 48 states and Alaska. Sears has also been an instructor at
Shell's technical training center, involved in exploration research, and
held the position of Manager of Exploration Economics for Shell Oil.
Formerly, he was Head of Exploration for Shell UK and most recently led
Shell's global deepwater exploration and subsurface development
activities. Since February of this year Sears has held the title of
Vice President, Academia for Shell and has been a Visiting Scientist at
MIT's Laboratory for Energy and the Environment
