Ellington Management Group, LLC - SUMMER INTERNSHIP-Software Developer
Hedge Fund Seeks SW Developer ? SUMMER INTERN
Company Overview
Ellington Management Group is a private investment management firm which manages
over $21B in Collateralized Debt Obligations ("CDO") assets and $4.5B NAV in
Hedge Fund capital. The company has grown into one of the world's largest MBS
hedge funds, and now employs over 115 professionals. Much of Ellington's senior
staff created the securities and developed the markets in which we actively
trade today.
Ellington specializes in fixed income relative value strategies, with an
emphasis on the mortgage-backed securities (MBS) market. CEO Michael Vranos,
founded the company in 1994. Prior to founding Ellington, Michael Vranos was
the head of MBS trading at Kidder Peabody and the #1 CMO originator on Wall
Street between the years of 1990 to 1994, with almost double the market share
of the nearest competitor.
Ellington pursues a wide range of investment strategies. The main strategy of
the company is a relative value strategy capturing stable income streams and
minimizing return volatility over time. The firm holds positions in equities,
currencies, mortgage backed and other securities. Ellington uses its
proprietary mathematical models to help hedge its positions against changes in
interest rates and other market events. In particular, these hedges counteract
the risk of prepayment inherent in the mortgage securities held by the firm.
Job Description
Ellington Management Group is looking for summer interns that have exceptional
quantitative and/or programming skills and an interest in financial markets. As
a software developer you will work with renowned researchers and the most
successful traders on Wall Street.
You will work side by side with our managing directors, who are graduates of
similar top institutions and who are among the most successful traders and
researchers on Wall Street. As an intern you may program in various languages
using mathematical methods to solve problems in fixed income finance.
Responsibilities will vary but could include analysis of large data sets,
formulation of statistical models, assisting in executing trades, building
simple models for valuing and understanding risks of securities. Knowledge of
statistics, option theory, and Monte Carlo techniques is useful but not
necessary.
The career path at Ellington is steeper than at many firms; past summer intern
projects have led directly to new and improved trading strategies.
Software Developers:
The ideal software developer will have exceptional programming skills, an
aptitude for creative problem solving and a desire to apply those skills to the
financial markets. Ellington makes extensive use of a wide variety of
programming languages and platforms: some of our developers work hand in hand
with quantitative researchers building state of the art financial models, some
work on the trading floor building tools for trade analysis and risk
management, and others work to integrate our proprietary analytic models,
accounting systems, and our global risk management systems.
We are looking for individuals with a passion for creating high-quality software
and a desire to solve real-world problems. Some of the fields that are of
particular interest to one or more of the groups here would include distributed
computing and numerical algorithms. No experience with any particular technology
is required, though some familiarity with object-oriented design is preferred by
several of the groups at Ellington.
The ideal Software Engineer Intern will have advanced programming skills in at
least one of C++, C, or VB. Experience in modeling, network programming, and
numerical programming are desirable. Software Engineers will work closely with
Analysts to formulate, solve, and implement financial models.
