Save the Children Bolivia, Help Argentina, MIT Design for Change Program,
Summer Internships (Posted 5/3/06)

I am the Coordinator of Internships for Design for Change, a student group
interested
in applying engineering solutions to problems of the developing world. We have
two summer internship opportunities in international development which would be
appropriate for someone in Course 6. Full descriptions are below. Both
positions
are with nonprofits in South America. The first with the Bolivian
branch of Save the Children and the second with an organization called Help
Argentina. Students can directly contact the mentioned project coordinators or
go through dfc-internships at mit.edu.

Thank you,

Sunita Darbe

Save the Children Bolivia

1. Project description: The intern will be involved in a sustainable,
capacity
building project by conducting training sessions in technology for adolescents
and young adults in the El Alto / La Paz region of Bolivia. Through hands on
interaction with participants in the Making Decisions adolescent program, the
intern will assist in developing technology integration and awareness
curriculum through activities like podcasting and on-line puzzles with the goal
of creating a Wikipedia style repository for education curriculum for Save the
Children's field offices and educators. Additionally, the intern will
participate in the development and training of in-depth entrepreneurial
curriculum for small enterprises in the technology sector.
2. What is the length of project: 2 months
3. Language skills required/desired: should be functional in the Spanish
language
4. Technical Skills required/desired: The position will involve a range of
skills, including the following: programming/application design in XML, CSS,
Ajax, and other web languages for the on-line content, skills and intuition for
business and entrepreneurship, and clear presentation of topics in Spanish.
5. General Skills required/desired: Student should be energetic,
enthusiastic,
flexible, and be able to exercise creativity.
6. What responsibilities, if any, will the student have prior to and
after the
placement? Prior to placement the intern should sharpen speaking and listening
skills in Spanish to be independent. After placement the intern should,
ideally, remain for a time as a contact for supporting the continuing
development of the on-line content.
7. What will the long term impact of the student's contribution be?
(How is this
project capacity-building?) The long term impact is creating education
materials
for/with technology in the burgeoning area of ICT in developing countries by
providing a foundation for growth.
8. Who is the primary contact for the project?
Seth S. Hammock
ICT Coordinator
Making Decisions Program
Save the Children Bolivia
shammock at savechildren.org.bo
9. Who will be supervising the student?s work? ICT Coordinator
10. What kind of accomodations are available to the student? (Does your
organization have the ability to arrange for accomodation?) Yes, we can arrange
for accommodations.
11. Can your organization provide any funding or other support for a
student?
No, we cannot provide funding.

Help Argentina

1. Project description: Migrating the complete HelpArgentina Website to a
content management system.
2. Objectives:
a. Increased usability (for both visitors and staff), improved content
structure, cleaner design.
b. Coherent tools and user/permission based workflows for site operation,
maintenance, and extension. Users may be both Help staff and member
organization representatives (Extranet, distributes site content publishing).
c. Complete and dynamic multi-language capacity The intern would be
involved in
the requirement collection from the stakeholders (though much of that would
already be completed upon arrival to save time), help with the drawing up of
the functional requirement specification, evaluate the CMS options and write
the technical requirement document, implement the project (CMS setup, extension
coding as necessary, porting of existing php-based functional modules, content
migration, and ideally some graphic design of the CMS based new site, testing
and QA, and project documentation and preparation of staff training.)
3. Challenges:
a. Complexity: The site is complex, uses many administrator functions,
database
management, custom processes. It has grown from being a simple, design-focused
institutional website to a major, mission critical work tool, incorporating
many processes online. However, this expansion has come in fits and starts,
using various different volunteers with different levels of experience, many of
whom are not available anymore for additional work or even comments. Hence, the
site is hard to maintain, functionality is often not documented, original
modules have been modified without maintaining consistency in methodology and
design. There also is a lot data junk on the server that nobody knows whether
it is still needed.
b. Design and Usability: The original design was not meant for growth.
Because
the site navigation and content structure has not scaled, important info is not
easily found, is hidden in some link somewhere not necessaril intuitively
placed, the visitor gets lost on the site, etc. On the staff side, there are
various important tools that do not talk to each other, and incoherent in their
usage, etc. The existing site admin does not cover many of the relevant and
quickly changing site parts, e.g. the news section is manually updated using
Dreamweaver, etc
4. What is the length of the project? 2-3 months, full time
5. Language skills required/desired: / Idiomas requeridos/preferidos?
English,
Spanish basics would be helpful
6. Technical Skills required/desired:
a. Excellent skills in php, MySQL database, and advanced Website design
b. Experience in content management implementations, open source
systems like
Mambo CMS or Drupal preferred as there is no budget for commercial software
c. Graphic design experience would be helpful (for the new site's layout)
d. Well developed documentation skills
7. General Skills required/desired: Capacidades generales
requeridas/preferidas?
a. careful and methodical professional
b. works well in a multicultural team environment
c. sympathy and interest for the HelpArgentina mission and the social
sector in
Argentina
8. What responsibilities, if any, will the student have prior to and
after the
placement?
a. it would be helpful is the student could commit some time
evaluating the
website prior to starting the project, so as to jump-start everything
b. after the implementation, it would be helpful if the student was
available
for at least comments and assistance to other programmers and users, ideally he
would occasionally be available for some site tweaks or extensions
9. What will the long term impact of the student's contribution be?
(How is this
project capacity-building?): The new website will be a major factor in
facilitating HelpArgentina's institutional growth. It is a crucial tool for all
it's stakeholders, staff, member NGOs, donors etc
10. Who is the primary contact for the project? HelpArgentina CTO -
Ingo Boltz
11. Who will be supervising the students work? HelpArgentina CTO -
Ingo Boltz
12. What kind of accomodations are available to the student? (Does your
organization have the ability to arrange housing?) We can assist the student in
looking for affordable housing. We may be able to offer (but can not garauntee
at this time) free/low-cost housing, such as an extra room in a staff member's
house.
13. Can your organization provide any funding or other support for a
student?
Unfortunately, we can not provide financial support for the student.

MIT Teacher Education Program, Part-Time Summer Sysadmin (Posted 5/3/06)

Interested in earning some extra $$ this summer doing SysAdmin work?

Paid Part-Time SysAdmin wanted for MIT Lab

The MIT Teacher Education Program is looking for a SysAdmin to help
maintain several servers. We are looking for someone to put in 2-10
hours a week (depending on the week) to perform basic security and
maintenance tasks, create user accounts, configure web services, and
occasionally set up new services. There are a combination of 2 Linux
and 1 Windows Server 2003 servers, which are used by 10-20 people.

The ideal candidate will have experience in:
- -Both Windows Server and Linux (RHEL) system administration
- -Database maintenance (MySQL)
- -Web applications (PHP, Perl)
- -Windows Active Directory shares and roaming profiles

Average weeks see only a few (2-4) hours of work (mix of on site and
remote). But upgrades and new tasks happen periodically that require
more time. This position is to replace an outgoing senior so
preference is for juniors or sophomores who will be around next
year. Starting as soon as possible is preferable, to work
temporarily with existing sysadmin (and learn the systems) and
through the summer.

Position pays UROP rate or better based on experience.

If you are interested, please email Prof. Eric Klopfer
(<mailto:klopfer at mit.edu>klopfer at mit.edu) with a description of your
experience and interest.
