The Aerospace Corporation Summer Internship
Internship opportunity at The Aerospace Corporation
(<http://www.aero.org/>www.aero.org) in
northern Virgina.
Im a recent grad (Course VI-1 '04, MEng '05) that works at a non profit
government contractor in the northern Virginia area. Were currently
seeking applicants for an internship position applicable to courses 6, 8,
or 18, though the latter two would need to have an interest in electrical
engineering applications of their majors.
We're essentially a non profit research and development lab. I work with
a number of bright people in a well funded laboratory environment. There
are two closely knit groups that work with both analog and digital
electronics as well as their applications to communication systems. I
actually interned here after my sophomore year, and enjoyed it enough to
come back full time later on in life, so I could definitely recommend the
experience as positive.
The summer project we have in mind involves a measurement campaign for a
ray tracing application. It will involve learning and applying our
hardware based data collection suite, followed by doing the initial data
processing in our custom application as well as MATLAB. Depending on your
interest and ability, you could become involved in the more advanced
processing.
In addition to this project, you would have exposure within our groups to
a variety of projects. We are currently developing projects such as FPGA
based communication receivers, advanced analog hardware, and an extensive
unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program.
If you're interested, please send me a current resume and a quick summary
(course numbers are fine) of the classes youve taken. In addition to
sophomores and juniors, motivated freshman are encouraged to apply.
US Citizenship is required for this position.
Thanks,

to Terry Fong <<mailto:terry at email.arc.nasa.gov>terry at email.arc.nasa.gov>
3D RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MARTIAN SURFACE FROM ORBITAL IMAGERY
The amount of image data of the surface of Mars is increasing
rapidly. Each new mission to Mars generates an order of magnitude more raw
data
than its predecessor. Scientists and mission planners increasingly rely on
autonomous, software-based data analysis techniques that locate the most
relevent pieces of data and derive useful high-level information; all
with a minimum of human intervention. The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics
Group is currently developing one such software package, the NASA Ames Stereo
Pipeline, for autonomously reconstructing 3D surfaces from stereo
imagery. The Ames Stereo Pipeline has been used to create 3D models from ground
imagery obtained by the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration Rovers
(MER) rovers as well as orbital imagery taken by the Mars Global Surveyor
(MGS) satellite. These models provide an intuitive, familiar 3D environment in
which mission scientists and engineers can make critically important
decisions such as landing site selection and robotic arm instrument
placement.
The Intelligent Robotics Group has a full-time student intern
position open for a Junior, Senior, or Graduate level college student with
a strong
interest in robotics and computer vision. The student will be responsible
for adapting the Ames Stereo Pipeline for use during upcoming NASA
missions to Mars, starting with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) mission
which will be entering Mars orbit during the summer of 2006. The student will
have the opportunity to work closely with members of the instrument team
that designed the wide-angle, high resolution context imager on MRO.
The applicant will also have the opportunity to help develop new stereo
processing capablities that advance the state of the art in surface
reconstruction for current NASA missions (e.g. one possible project
would be to develop a wide baseline stereo model generation capability for the
Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission).
This project will entail significant software engineering and C++
programming, but the main focus will be on applied computer vision and
surface reconstruction. The student will have ample opportunity to
identify and solve challenging engineering problems geared toward
improving the performance and expanding the capabilities of the Ames Stereo
Pipeline. At the end of the internship, the student will be encouraged to
summarize his/her work in a research paper and submit it to a conference for
publication.
NASA Internship - GPU Accelerated Image Processing and Computer Vision

GPU ACCELERATED IMAGE PROCESSESING AND COMPUTER VISION
NASA receives an order of magnitude more information from each new
mission it sends to Mars. A considerable amount of this data is from passive
camera-based sensor systems mounted on rovers or orbiting spacecraft.
Consequently, computer vision algorithms are of particular relevence to
NASA mission specialists who need to process the image data as
quickly and efficiently as possible. Unfortunately, computer vision
algorithms
tend to be compute intensive, making real-time interaction with image data sets
difficult. Furthermore, the use of computer vision as a source of
real-time, high-resolution sensory information onboard rovers is
typically problematic due to the computational overhead and time delays these
algorithms incur.
The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group seeks to hire a Junior, Senior, or
Graduate level student intern to help us accelerate our machine vision
toolkit, the NASA Ames Vision Workbench, by using the general purpose
processing capabilities of modern computer graphics hardware. The
Vision Workbench can perform complicated tasks such as (1) reconstructing 3D
surfaces using stereo vision techniques, (2) stitching and projecting
images into high dynamic range (HDR) 3D panoramas, and (3) selecting
scale and lighting invariant image features that can be used for automated
image alignment and target tracking across multiple images. Our goal is to
gain an order of magnitude speed improvement by harnessing the power and
programmability of today's graphics hardware. To this end, the
applicant will be resposible for rewriting critical portions of the Vision
Workbench using OpenGL shader language or NVidia's CG shader language.
The internship will entail significant development work using C++ and
shader languages, and will require a reasonable level of familiarity
with OpenGL, Linux development, and the hardware architecture of modern
graphics cards. The applicant should also have a strong interest in computer
vision and image processing, and must be proficient in the use of linear
algebra and discrete time signal processing techniques. At the end of the
internship, the student will be encouraged to summarize his/her work
in a research paper and submit it to a conference for publication.

Stuttgart University, Germany, Evaluation of LabView Applications for
Control Purposes of Ultrasonic Motors
This internship project will be offered with the support of DAAD (German
service for academic exchange) and will be supported with a monthly
stipend for a period of three months. The MIT Germany program will
possibly cover the cost of the flight. The application deadline is the
1st of February.
*Evaluation of LabView Applications for Control Purposes of Ultrasonic Motors*
The functional principle of ultrasonic motors is based on the conversion
of piezoelectrically generated vibrational energy into motion by use of
a frictional contact. Strong vibration is usually generated using
resonant states of simple geometric structures e.g. tubes, discs or
blocks with electrodes applied on the surface of the structures as
needed to excite the chosen resonant state.
Control and excitation of these resonant states has always been a
challenging task as piezoelectric ceramics constitute predominantly
capacitive devices. To represent ultrasonic motors in a way more suited
for control design lumped electrical equivalent circuits have been
devised and are well represented in literature. The purpose of
equivalent circuit modelling is the application of matching network
theory to create more or less resistive loads under optimum driving
conditions in a frequency range of up to 200 kHz and voltage levels up
to 300 V. The necessary equipment for measuring consists of two high
frequency power amplifiers that can drive capacitive loads at up to
800 kHz and are used for basic verification of motor designs.
The goal of this project is the development of a universal drive and
measurement system for more specific prototype testing purposes of
ultrasonic motors using LabView 7 and LabView Realtime including the
power amplifiers. First an environment for equivalent circuit modelling
has to be completed. Especially loading shall be considered to select
proper matching networks accordingly and possibly a revision of basic
equivalent circuits for resonant piezoelectric actuators has to be
devised. Different motors with well known characteristics are available
from Physik Instrumente, a world leader in micro positioning devices and
Shinsei Corporation one of the first industrial suppliers of ultrasonic
motors as well as some more rugged ultrasonic cleaning tank vibrators.
The control algorithm shall be implemented using the phase relation
between current and voltage for a frequency tracking algorithm to keep
the vibrator in its most efficient resonant state. The control loop
shall be implemented on a National Instruments real time operating
system using a regular desktop computer with Labview for programming.
Verification of motor operation in controlled resonance shall be
verified thereafter.

their chapters: rosters, calendars, budgets, documents, forums,
cleanup schedules, and rush/recruitment information. Eventually, we
hope it will become THE online tool for FSILGs, and will replace many
of their internal sites.
One of the advantages of using FSILGsys and contributing to it (it is
an open source project) will be that chapters will no longer have to
rebuild their internal sites every 4-6 years, but rather can all
contribute to functionality that the entire community can use.
FSILGsys will provide opportunities for data analysis that was either
too difficult or vitually impossible before. While this is one of the
boons of FSILGsys, we recognize that chapters may be hesitant to share
their data with the world: chapters will have fine-grained control
over exactly how their data is used. Default settings will only allow
data to be used by members of the chapter. NO ONE will have
priveleged access to data they are not explicitly given access to,
even MIT administrators.
Let me know if you're interested!
Thanks,
Josh Grochow

*2006 Summer Intern Job Descriptions*
*Graphics & Vision Research Intern** (Requisition No. MS010608) - Seattle*
Computers today are used much more for communication than computation.
Yet, to date, most of our software for helping people communicate
centers on emulating existing physical media, rather than on harnessing
the true power and potential of the computer. This internship will focus
on research toward using the computer to communicate in new ways. The
specific project may be in any number of areas, from new technologies
for digital photography or video; to interactive tools for compositing,
painting, or illustration; to high-level tools for creating animated
presentations; to document layout. The intern should be enrolled in a
PhD program in Computer Science and have research experience in computer
graphics and/or vision.
*Adobe Parallel Graphics Group Intern (Requisition No. MS010607) San Jose*
The intern position in the Adobe Parallel Graphics Group will focus on
algorithms targeting multi-core and GPU architectures. Scope includes 2D
and 3D rendering, physically-based modeling, including natural
phenomena, natural media simulation and simulation-based animation. The
candidates should be in a Masters or Ph.D. program in computer graphics.
Familiarity with GPU programming is a requirement. The goal of the
program is to research and develop new algorithms that push the
state-of-the-art of Adobe products. An ideal outcome would be a
publication of work developed during the internship.
*Portable Directories Intern (Requisition No. MS010606) San Jose*
A portable directory is a normal file within a file system that itself
is turned into a file system. That is, we provide software that will use
the space provided within a (large) single file to support all the
normal file system operations such as creating a subfile, creating a
directory, deleting subfiles and directories, and updating any existing
subfile. The commonly used ZIP format with an extra layer of optimizing
software can provide such a portable directory implementation. Other
solutions are widely available including the product e_Fs by Simple
Software Solutions (
<http://www.simple-sw.com/efsinfo.htm>http://www.simple-sw.com/efsinfo.htm
<http://www.simple-sw.com/efsinfo.htm>),Windows OLE Structured Storage,
and Mac OS X Packages.
The intern on this project will study these and other implementations of
portable directories, building a realistic test framework and test cases
and compare the various solutions for speed, efficient use of file
space, flexibility of software APIs, etc.
*
**Fax Signatures in Acrobat Intern** (Requisition No. MS010605) San Jose*
We may have overlooked the simplest kind of signature for an electronic
document, which is just a simple graphic presentation of a pen and ink
signature. Such signatures have been widely accepted for fax documents,
in most states legally binding, and we need to extend the notion to PDF
files as well. The student intern will implement a plug-in for Acrobat
that will import an image of the user's signature and password protect
it within Acrobat for subsequent uses. Further the plug-in will have a
trivial interface to allow the user, after entering the password, to
place that signature at the appropriate spot on a page of an electronic
document. Perhaps most challenging will be the need to accept pictures
of the user's signature from digital cameras, including cell phone
cameras, and then process them into a form most suitable for Acrobat's
use. This will involve making the inked portion black or blue or red
(simulating ink on paper), the background transparent, and adjusting the
size and resolution to match the typical needs of a signature on paper.
*Image Processing & Vision Intern (Requisition No. MS010604) San Jose*
Traditional image processing is based on the relationships between the
colors of adjacent pixels in an image. More recent work has achieved
some level of success in identifying semantic objects in images, either
through more sophisticated analyses of single images to find
recognizable structures using learning machines, or through the
identification of coherently-moving objects in video. Several projects
are underway investigating these approaches. Projects arising out of
these investigations include, but are not limited to, extensions of
existing automatic red-eye correction techniques to handle pet-eye
correction, image correspondence based on extended structures as well as
the traditional small regions, and the establishment of a ground truth
database for use in image categorization. The ideal intern should be
enrolled in a Masters or PhD Computer Science program with an interest
and experience in computer vision research.
