Summer research in Singapore: microfluidics manufacturability (Posted 4/14/06)

Internship in the hot embossing of polymers for manufacturing
microfluidic devices

We're seeking an undergraduate student for a summer internship
at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) in
Singapore. As part of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA), a team
is developing techniques for the manufacture of polymer
microfluidic devices. The aim of this internship will be to
characterize a commercial tool which hot-embosses patterns,
comprising features of diameters >100 nm, into a layer of the
thermoplastic polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

Working in the clean-room at IBN, the first task will be to make
a set of silicon stamps carrying test patterns designed at MIT.
These stamps will be made using a well-understood plasma etching
process. The stamps will then be mounted, in turn, in the
embossing tool and used to pattern a series of substrates. We
want to find out how the thickness of the polymer layer, the
embossing temperature, pressure, and duration, and the design of
the embossed pattern each determine the quality of the embossed
parts.

After embossing PMMA layers of differing thickness, we hope to
use optical methods to investigate residual stresses in the
components.

The intern will spend about three months in Singapore
(June - August), working with a research scientist there and
keeping in touch regularly with colleagues at MIT. It would
certainly be possible to begin work on the project before
leaving for Singapore, and to pursue the research at MIT after
returning.

Previous clean-room experience, and possibly having taken
6.152J, would be an advantage, but is not necessary.

Round-trip air travel from Boston and a living allowance will be
provided.

Harvard/MIT Startup, Immediate Openings for Co-Founders (Posted 4/17/06)

Two Harvard Business School students (MIT BS 2001, MIT M. Eng 2003; Wake
Forest BS 2001, Harvard Law School JD 2008,) are seeking two talented
programmers to join their team as cofounders and build a prototype website
for an online social network with a unique twist. In terms of expectations,
we imagine initially putting in 20 hrs/week over a 4-6 week period and then
5-10 hrs/week subsequently as we develop and refine the prototype. While
this site has the potential to turn into something large, we do not expect
this to be a full-time commitment during the development phase but rather
something "on the side." To stimulate adoption of the network, we are
considering both letting this network grow organically - think Craig's List
- - and using outside funding depending on development progress and our future
conversations with potential investors. If this type of working
relationship appeal to you and you're interested in learning about our idea,
email us with your resume. We'll setup a time for us to chat.

MIT IS&T Infrastructure SW Development & Architecture Group, Summer SW Jobs
(Posted 4/21/06)

ISDA Seeking Student Employees

The Infrastructure Software Development and Architecture (ISDA) group within
MIT Information Services and Technology (IS&T) has responsibilities for
MIT's Data Warehouse, Kerberos development, Authentication and Authorization
services, OKI, and development of delivery platforms. We are seeking up to
four students to work with us on a variety of projects during the summer of
2006. Employment may optionally be extended into the academic year.

We are seeking applicants with a variety of skills. These include experience
with C, C#, Java, XML, XSLT, databases, Ruby on Rails, and web services.

Sample projects include:

* Develop a multi-tier demo application that shows the use of GSSAPI and
http-spnego authentication with a web application that talks to a back end
database. This will include demonstrating Kerberos authentication to an
Oracle backend. This will require the student to carefully document the code
and point out the security concerns. If time permits the student will also
work on implementing constrained delegation to address some of the security
concerns.

* Create a proof of concept web interface to modify authorization
definitions in the MIT Roles Database. The web application will provide
authorized users the ability to add, delete, or modify authorization
definitions. This may involve creating a web service interface to the Roles
DB.

* Set up automated testing between MIT Kerberos, Heimdal, Active Directory
and other Kerberos implementations. Involves learning about automated
installation of a variety of operating systems, building a reproducible test
environment, and learning about how corporate authentication works. This is
an excellent position for someone interested in software packaging or IT
security.

* Implement a feature in MIT Kerberos called encryption type negotiation
that allows people to more easily retire DES and move to modern encryption.
This will be a good introduction to practical uses of cryptography and
security protocols but does not require in depth knowledge of how encryption
works. This will probably involve learning about Windows Vista and software
testing. This would be an excellent introduction for someone interested in
writing computer security software.

* Learn about real world software engineering, Kerberos and computer
security by working to fix outstanding bugs in MIT Kerberos. Based on your
skill level and interests you can learn about a variety of issues including
OS portability, making software from different vendors work together, memory
management, and making software easy to use.

* Develop proof of concept OKI OSIDs and web service interfaces for some
existing MIT services, examples include:

- - Scheduling services that work with TechTime, the MIT Events Calendar, and
Apple iCal. The MIT Events Calendar already exposes a web service. Oracle
provides a java class interface to TechTime and iCal uses webdav.

- - UserMessaging OSIDs and a web service interface that supports using XMPP,
SMS and authenticated SMTP for transport independent notifications.

- - Workflow OSID that demonstrates the use of the Windows Workflow Engine
that will ship as part of Windows Vista.

* Write XSLT to translate any XOSID spec to a sensible c# binding. This
provides an automated method to create an OSID useable by C# programmers.
This work will involve an ongoing dialog with people from Microsoft.

* Implement Mozilla Extensions to support GUI configuration of GSS
authentication in Firefox and Thunderbird. Support for the authentication
already exists but configuration must be set manually via about:config or
via a configuration file.

Interested applicants should send mail to
