Inspired by the ability of seals to detect flow features and other underwater information through their whiskers, Professor Michael Triantafyllou and Dr. Heather Beem (PhD ’15) have designed a sensor that could be used by underwater robots to collect data on hydrothermal events or marine life. Professor Seth Lloyd was recently appointed the Nam P. Suh Professor of Mechanical Engineering, a new chair established through the generous gift of MechE alumnus Hock E. Tan (SB ’75, SM ’75), in honor of Professor Emeritus Nam P. Suh.

Professor John Heywood has been elected as an ASME Fellow.
Professor Yang Shao-Horn was recently appointed the W.M. Keck Professor of Energy.
Associate Professor Evelyn Wang has been elected as an ASME Fellow. She was also recently appointed the Gail E. Kendall Professor.
Associate Professor Xuanhe Zhao was recently appointed the Robert N. Noyce Career Development Professor.
