Dear MIT storytellers:

We want to share with you three IAP sessions to be held on three successive Fridays in January in the IASC reading room 14N-118. These presentations will show you some of the archival records, publications and special collections that you can use in your work as MIT communicators and storytellers. We hope you will join us!

Best regards,
Myles

Voices from the Archives
One of the interesting things about archival records is that it's not just about "famous" people. Materials in the IASC are original and unique and can give voice to many stories or pieces of stories. This session is informal and hands on- we'll have a variety of examples for you to look at, examine, and listen to so you can "meet" people who were at MIT before you. Your story could be here in the future. Come and see what we have. --Liz Andrews, Myles Crowley, Nora Murphy
Enrollment: Limited: First come, first served (no advance sign-up). Limited to 30 participants.

Historical Hooch and Fabulous Food
Have you ever wondered...

  * what discoveries MIT students have made about the science of alcohol distillation?
  * how MIT students reacted to Prohibition?
  * what Louis Pasteur wrote about wine fermentation?
  * how an MIT professor used chemistry to determine why some batches of mayonnaise tasted worse than others?
  * what kinds of foods have been served at various campus events through the years?
Bring your appetite for history and join us as we explore these topics (and more!) in the IASC. --Dana Hamlin, Nora Murphy, Chris Tanguay
Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up

What's Old is New: Recent Additions to our Special Collections
This year the IASC and the Lewis Music Library have added some very cool things to their special collections. Lewis Music has acquired a 15th century chant book that's got to be the biggest volume you've ever seen. For balance, they've acquired a teeny tiny miniature book to go with it. The Archives has some "new" acquisitions too: want to see a 4,000 year old cuneiform tablet? How about a second-folio copy of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar from 1632? If you prefer something more recent, we'll have a mid-20th century lab notebook from a founding member of the Center for Cancer Research. Come get an up-close look at these treasures and several others. Drop in between 10 and 11 am. --Stephen Skuce
Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up
