Hi Alissa and former colleagues,
I’m responding to Alissa's message to the Editors’ Group requesting information about college interns. I’m a 32-year communications veteran of MIT, though I retired very early after getting a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. However, during my tenure in five different MIT communications positions, I hired interns to help in my work. I always used interns from the Simmons College Department of Communications. I’m a graduate of that department and had the benefit of doing several internships through it when I was putting myself through college. I did both paid and unpaid internships and also received college credit for that work experience (though I did have to pay tuition for the credits I received). The Communications program at Simmons includes a wide range of required courses including graphic design, copy and proof, PR & marketing, journalism, and now web design & development (though that came after my years at Simmons). I don’t have a current contact name and number for the staff member who coordinates Communications Department internships at Simmons, but I’d suggest calling the Office of the Chair of the department at: 617-521-2827. It was great to work with some talented young women in the internships I supervised, and it was satisfying to provide work experience for them as they assisted me with my responsibilities. (I think it was a real win-win situation, and I love those.)
I hope this information is helpful to you and possibly to others in the Group.
Best,
Janet Snover

Hi All,
I’m interested in hiring an (unpaid) college intern to help with communications tasks this fall. Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a particular process we have to follow or a best place to hire from?
Thanks for any insight you can share!
Best,
Alissa
