MIT EDITORS' CLUB
*Meeting Notes from January 17, 2014*
*Cool Freebie*
As Regular Readers of these minutes know well, I enjoy sharing with this group the range of freebies or discounts available to us as MIT employees. At this meeting, Ken Gagne, the webmaster at MIT Medical, shared a great one that was news to me: MIT has a "sleep and relaxation line" that you can call to get a three-minute guided meditation. Call 3-CALM.
*Diversity Summit*
REMEMBER to register for the 2014 Diversity Summit next week, January 27-29. Joan Marshall, communications manager for Human Resources, pointed out that you can sign up for whatever workshops you'd like, as fits your schedule. For more information, go to: http://diversity.mit.edu/summit or give Joan a call at 253-6647.
*Remember IAP*
Also remember to check out any remaining talks/tours available through IAP (MIT's annual Independent Activities Period this month). Editors at this meeting shared some of the talks and tours they attended, which included a tour of the Nuclear Reactor Lab, a panel discussion on science writing, and a lecture at the Media Lab about things invented before their time. Kiirja Paananen, web producer for the Office of Sponsored Programs, attended the latter, and shared with us a few great examples: the electric car (it was apparently invented 100 years ago) and LEDs (invented over 100 years ago).
*Useful Article*
I told the group about a useful article I came across recently titled "12 Outdated Web Features That Need to Disappear in 2014." I also posted this on Yammer, but for those who don't use that service, go to:
