MIT EDITORS' CLUB
*Meeting Notes from October 11, 2013*
*Welcome.mit*
Joan Marshall, communications manager for Human Resources, told us about a new web site for new MIT employees that I think could also be of interest to anyone (for example, ever the bargain hunter, I immediately clicked on "perks"). Among other things, the site leads a new employee through an automated checklist of things to do over your first days, months, and year at MIT. I personally love the little grey "info boxes" sprinkled throughout the site---one example, which you can access by clicking on the Before you Start section, tackles MIT Jargon. Useful!
Almost forgot: if you have any suggestions for the site, feel free to send Joan a note at jlmarsh at MIT.EDU<mailto:jlmarsh at MIT.EDU>
*Google Analytics*
Of potential interest to many of you: a free course from google on Digital Analytics Fundamentals. Here's the description: "This three-week course provides a foundation for marketers and analysts seeking to understand the core principles of digital analytics and to improve business performance through better digital measurement."
Although the course started a few weeks ago, you can jump in whenever you want because it's on the web at <https://analyticsacademy.withgoogle.com/preview>. (All of the lessons are available there; I believe the only thing that isn't available once the course "ends" is a course forum for participants.) BTW, I learned of the course through the social media group on MIT Yammer, which I personally think is a pretty nice resource. (Go to the following url to join MIT Yammer: <https://www.yammer.com/mit.edu/#/Threads/index?type=following>. Two groups of special interest to Editors: MIT Social Media, and Communicators/Writers/Editors.)
*Fair Use and Copyright*
Ellen Duranceau, Program Manager for Scholarly Publishing and Licensing at the MIT Libraries, recently talked about copyright law and much more at a riveting meeting of the Social Media Working Group (chaired by our own Stephanie Hatch). Ellen is a wonderful resource on this topic, and is happy to answer any questions that members of Editors' Club might have on this topic. She can be reached at:
