On the heels of last month’s parade of faculty kudos comes another lineup:
Xavier de Souza Briggs has been appointed vice president of the Economic Opportunity and Assets program of the Ford Foundation; he will go on public service leave from MIT and start at Ford effective January 1.
Tod Machover has been named the first recipient of the inaugural Arts Advocacy Award from the Kennedy Center, given to individuals who have dramatically affected the performing arts landscape through their arts advocacy efforts.
Christoph Reinhart is one of 13 Stars of Building Science elected to the 2013 Virtual Academy of Excellence in a poll conducted by Building4change, an online knowledge hub launched in 2009 by the BRE Trust.
Ed Boyden has received two awards from the National Institutes of Health – a Pioneer Award to develop brain activity maps that could help reveal changes in brain computations occurring in brain disorders; and a Transformative Research Award to develop a nanoscale device that writes neural activities onto DNA, like a nanoscale ticker-tape machine.

Judith Layzer has been named director of the MIT Martin Family Society of Fellows for Sustainability, a program supporting multi-disciplinary research of environmental sustainability at the graduate level; Martin Fellows are dedicated to a collaborative approach to the critical issues associated with environmental sustainability.
Muntadas has a new exhibit at the Galeria Joan Prats in Barcelona, on display through November; Protocolli Veneziani I is the first phase of a project on Venice, composed of a collection of images revealing the norms that regulate life in the city, creating a framework in which inhabitants develop their respective existences.
Jason Corburn (MCP’96; PhD’02, Urban Studies and Planning) has been presented with the Global Citizen Award for his collaborative work on behalf of Kenya’s urban slum dwellers, documented in his new book, Healthy City Planning: From Neighbourhood to National Health Equity, (Routledge).
Matthew Mazzotta (SMVisS’04) has been presented with a $5K Individual Arts Award by the Santo Foundation; he was one of three artists so honored out of more than 900 applicants.
Jamie Zigelbaum (SM’08, Media Arts and Sciences) has opened a new enterprise in New York, the Jamie Zigelbaum Studio. His recent artwork Pixel was the second-highest seller at the first auction of digital art from the Phillips auction house; he was also featured in the October 20 Design Issue of T Magazine.
