[Editors] self-publishing

Several of my elderly alumni correspondents are in the process of writing their memoirs, including a big chunk devoted to their MIT years. They are aware of the burgeoning opportunities for self-publishing but don't know where to start. Does anyone have direct experience with self-publishing, so that I could give them names and e-mails? While they all want as attractive a finished project as possible, their budgets range from penny-pinching to unlimited.
