Hi all -

Please forgive me if this isn't the appropriate list to send this announcement, but I'm trying to spread the word about an interesting study that is taking place this summer at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research — and I thought this group might be willing/able to help!

The Gabrieli Lab recently showed that brain imaging can predict reading improvement in older children, but the new study (part of a new wave in neuroimaging research called "neuroprediction") is now asking the question: can brain imaging help us predict who will benefit from specific reading interventions? (Pretty cool, as this kind of thing has never been done before).

Here's where i need your help: the GabLab is looking to recruit young children (1st and 2nd graders) who have reading difficulties as well as those who don't. Perks for parents include 6 weeks of free reading intervention; perks for kids = a picture of their brain and up to $200 in bookstore gift cards! Thought I'd pass the email along to this group in the hopes that you might help get the message out. Anne Trafton at the MIT News Office wrote a nice story about the GabLab's research: http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2010/dyslexia-1221.html and you can find more information about this new "START" study below.

I posted the information to our twitter feed and Facebook page, so if you'd be willing to retweet/share, I'd really appreciate it!

Sincerely,

Julie Pryor

MIT offering free reading intervention programs this summer

Do you know a 1st grader who may be at risk for reading difficulty? Through a partnership at the Gabrieli Lab at MIT<http://gablab.mit.edu/> and Lindamood-Bell<http://www.lindamoodbell.com/>, we are offering a free evidence-based reading intervention program this summer.

Participating 1st graders will complete a 6-week reading intervention program in small groups provided by trained Lindamood-Bell instructors. Participants will be required to complete behavioral testing and safe brain imaging before and after the intervention, for which they will be paid up to $200 in bookstore gift cards.

We are excited to offer this free opportunity to families and students. To find out more, please visit our website (http://gablab.mit.edu/index.php/participate/join-the-start-study), email us at TheStartStudy at gmail.com<mailto:TheStartStudy at gmail.com> or call 617-286-4119.
