Hi Myles,
In general, a designer would want to know who your audience is, what your goals are and how the logo will be used. For something relatively simple, the schedule could be as quick as a few weeks. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have more questions or would like specific recommendations.
Thanks,
Bara

Subject: [Editors] logo designers
Dear MIT Editors,
Does anyone have advice to share—either to the group or to me directly--about finding and working with a designer on a logo and basic graphic identity for your organization? What was the scope of your project? What did the designer require? How long was the process?
My church wants to have a logo for our letterhead, email newsletter, website, etc. We have a new mission statement and are in the midst of a major capital campaign and so we have done some work on this. But as a small non-profit, we do not a large budget for communications.
Thanks for your help!
Myles
