Hi Editors,
I posted this to staff working in social media at the Institute, but Elizabeth told me the editors group might be interested as well.
The subject is Memes. You may have noticed that college memes are the big thing at the moment.
'Meme' is a short version of mimeme, meaning an imitation. It's a replicating concept or idea that is propagated on the internet and evolves along the way. It usually takes the form of a parody or involves the use of a recognizable image/phrase/etc. and playing with it (= an imitation that is really a mutation of sorts).
Here's an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AllYourDataArBelongToUS.png
College memes are popular right now. Here's a MIT Memes Fb page (thanks Nancy Duvergne Smith for finding it): http://www.facebook.com/pages/MIT-Memes/104423009685578
p.s. if you do want to receive updates about social media, reply back and let me know. I send out an email at least once per week.
Stephanie
