Communications Officer
Job Description

The MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change<http://globalchange.mit.edu/> seeks a communications officer to facilitate external communications and manage the dissemination of public information. The successful applicant will function as a writer and editor, webmaster, and public information officer promoting the program's research and newsworthy activities.

Key activities will include:
*         Manage and extend communications efforts in support of the program's mission; develop and implement plans, manage resources, monitor progress toward goals, evaluate performance, anticipate issues, and with input from program directors devise solutions.
*         Work with scientists and economists to translate complex ideas and technical findings and prepare research highlights for public release; interact with faculty, researchers, and students to clarify subject matter and assure clearance of materials prior to publication.
*         Produce quarterly newsletters for sponsor liaisons in industry, government, and foundations; prepare monthly spotlights on a recent publication for a federal sponsor; contribute to the preparation of high-level briefing materials; create targeted communication products as needed for a variety of specific events.
*         Write news releases and coordinate with MIT News Office to feature highlights; receive public and media inquiries and respond/redirect or coordinate reply as appropriate.
*         Maintain and enhance the program's website, social media, and other communication outlets; create original content and optimize exposure; procure and supervise programming or other assistance as needed.
*         Oversee the program's multimedia products (webinars, videos, apps), electronic and print publications, and shared communication resources (brochures, schematics, templates, internal-wiki).
*         Organize program participation in educational outreach activities; promote understanding of integrated assessment of global environmental change and the issues relevant to climate and energy policy debates.
Requirements

A bachelor's degree in environmental science, economics, engineering, public policy or other related field (or relevant experience) combined with familiarity with global change issues, and evidence of an ability to communicate complex concepts. Excellent writing and interpersonal skills; proficiency with modern publishing and web-based communication tools; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with a diverse interdisciplinary group. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US. Science journalism experience, or an advanced technical degree, or a multidisciplinary background preferred. An understanding of economic/policy analysis and (/or) climate science is highly desirable.
