Subject: 11/29 MIT Political Science Distinguished Speakers- Dr. Regina Dugan & Dr. Ken Gabriel
Importance: High
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce the third gathering of the MIT Political Science Distinguished Speaker Series, featuring Dr. Regina Dugan, Director, DARPA and Dr. Kaigham (Ken) Gabriel, Deputy Director, DARPA with an introduction by President Hockfield. The talk will be on Tuesday, November 29 at 12p.m. in Bartos Theater, E15-070.
Formed in 1958 after the Sputnik launch, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has a singular mission: to prevent and create strategic surprise. The principal agency within the Department of Defense (DoD) for research, development and demonstration of high-risk, high-payoff capabilities, DARPA has persisted as a critical-mass collection of some of the best and brightest technical visionaries for the DoD and the Nation for more than 50 years. Throughout its history, DARPA has had achievements ranging from the Internet to stealth, from GPS to MEMS, from rockets to the M-16 rifle, and from crowd sourced vehicles to plant-derived vaccines. Today, DARPA is tackling some of the most pressing and vexing challenges facing the nation, including energy security and maintaining technology superiority.
This series is co-sponsored with a new Institute initiative: Production in the Innovation Economy (PIE). We kicked off the successful series on September 15 with an afternoon forum “Rebuilding the American Economy.” We had a terrific lineup of experts from government, academia and industry participating in the event. Our keynote speaker at the forum was Mr. Ron Bloom, former Senior Counselor to the President for Manufacturing Policy and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury.
Our second session featured Governor Ted Strickland, who gave a fascinating talk on, “Rebuilding Manufacturing: A View from the Center of the Country.” During his tenure Governor Strickland led the development of a strong and growing new energy economy in Ohio. He introduced and signed legislation which will make Ohio the 3rd largest producer of renewable energy in the nation. Strickland served in the US House of Representatives prior to his election to the governorship. During his six terms in Congress, he was instrumental in expanding access to health insurance for children, and increased investments in the State for technology, and economic development.
I very much hope to see you at the November 29 event. But, if you were unable to attend, please feel free to watch the videos on our site <http://web.mit.edu/polisci/index.shtml> .
Regards,
Rick Locke
