I stand corrected. (It's been 25 years since I wrote this piece.) The blizzard I refer to was in 1940 (which is why the horses and sleighs were still around - they were gone by 1948). I found this photo online which is one I used to illustrate the article I wrote back then. Taken in the Back Bay, this depicts a state DPW V and wing plow drafted to help the city of Boston. Boston plows were smaller than the state's and couldn't handle the snow.
