MIT EDITORS' CLUB

*Meeting Notes from October 13, 2010*

BREAKING NEWS

The following has absolutely nothing to do with the last meeting of MIT Editors' Club, but it's cool, so I'm including it in these minutes.

I just added the 200th member of MIT Editors' Club. Woo hoo! Wish I was a graphic designer, as I'd do something special for this note other than simply type in boring ole' Verdana 14.

*MIT Dining*

Yes, this is the correct subhead. These meetings almost always include something that's completely irrelevant to communications. Anyway, it turns out that several of the folks at this meeting didn't know that dining at the Hyatt close to Building W98 is *40 percent off* for MIT employees with an ID.

If you'd like to grab lunch on the side of campus, Sarah Foote told us about the cafe in the new E62 (no discounts). Sounds like cafe or not, E62 is worth checking out. The building, which is the most energy-efficient at MIT, features such things as "terrazzo" flooring that's made from crushed beer bottles! Also: some of the walls are made of 100-million-year-old limestone embedded with fossils.

*Student Media Releases*

"How long should one hold onto student media releases [for photos]?" asked Jessica Jones of the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, who has releases going back 19 years. People were very interested in this one, but no one was quite sure of the answer. Several folks suggested digitizing the releases then storing the paper copies somewhere out of the way. For the future, we wondered whether MIT has a system for filing permissions electronically.

If you know the answer to these questions, or have other advice for the group related to releases, send a note to us at editors at mit.edu<mailto:editors at mit.edu>

*Communicator's Toolkit*

The Publishing Services Bureau will be launching a COOL new website this fall that I think all of us will be interested in. The Communicator's Toolkit will include resources for MIT staff whose jobs involve communications, and will also serve as a virtual community where communications staff can connect with one another, wrote Bara Blender of the PSB in a note to me about the new site.

Want to know more? Come to the next meeting of this club, which will be held at the PSB. There Bara will tell us more about the upcoming site.

*Thank You, Robyn!*

Many thanks to Robyn Fizz of IS&T, who hosted this meeting in Building N42.

*Next Meetings*

The next meetings of MIT Editors' Club, which are always 12-1, are as follows:

Tuesday, Nov. 16
E38-254 (at the Publishing Services Bureau). PLEASE NOTE that I gave the wrong location in the September minutes. E38-254 is the CORRECT location.

Wednesday, Dec. 8
E19-319

Cheers,

Elizabeth
