Dear Colleagues,

Please note there has been a slight schedule change in the two workshops offered by the MIT Libraries beginning next week. Original dates remain the same, but content has switched.

Using the Institute Archives to Research MIT History will now be offered next Friday, April 2, and Research Techniques for Writers and Editors will be April 9.

Using the Institute Archives to Research MIT History
Date: Friday, April 2, 1-2pm
Location: 14N-118, Institute Archives & Special Collections Reading Room

Ever wonder how to find out more about the history of MIT, locate the thesis of a famous MIT alum, or get historic background information on a MIT department, lab or program? Many answers can be found in MIT's Institute Archives, keepers of MIT's administrative records, faculty papers, theses, and MIT publications dating back to the 1800s. With MIT's 150th anniversary approaching, this is a particularly timely workshop for MIT communicators.

Research Techniques for Writers and Editors
Date: Friday, April 9, 1-2pm
Location: 14N-132, MIT Libraries' Digital Instruction Resource Center

Learn how to use the Libraries' resources and databases to research your own articles or find past articles written about MIT. This workshop will show you how to connect from your desktop to a wealth of online resources licensed to MIT, such as Lexis Nexis, Factiva, ProQuest, historic newspaper databases and more. The experts at the libraries will show you the best techniques for effective searches beyond a Google search, and how to connect with subject specialists in specific MIT disciplines.

Workshops are open to members of the MIT community. No registration required; seating is limited so please arrive early. Presentation materials will be made available on the Communications Workshops site (http://web.mit.edu/commworkshops/).

Many thanks to Elizabeth Thomson and her colleagues in Resource Development and Editors’ Club, and the Publishing Services Bureau for their suggestions in formulating these workshops!

Thank you,
Heather
