MIT EDITORS' CLUB

*Meeting Notes from April 7, 2010*

*Facebook*
Facebook dominated this month's meeting of MIT Editors' Club. Here are a few comments from the resulting discussion:

--In general, folks were ravenous for more information about how to work with this popular social-networking app, especially professionally. Someone noted that there's a good article "out there" on using Facebook professionally. My quick search turned up the following (may not be the same article, but it's got to be similar):

http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/07/24/12-ways-to-use-facebook-professionally/

--Patsy Sampson of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science noted that EECS has only had a Facebook page since January, and already they've got over 430 members. She's found that students in particular seem to really like it. She's also noticed that VIDEOS seem to be quite popular. Here's the page, so you can take a peek yourself:

--What's the best way to get people to comment about an item on your Facebook page? Simple! Just make a mistake, says Lisa Damtoft of MIT Medical, who went on to describe her personal experience with this (hers was a very *small* mistake :)

--All those present agreed that Facebook settings are pretty confusing but also pretty important. For more, go to: http://www.allfacebook.com/2009/02/facebook-privacy/

*Need Help?*

Robyn Fizz of IS&T told us about a nice resource for (potentially free) writing, video and web help: Emerson College interns! She noted that students there are often interested in volunteering their time, especially given the current job market, because even unpaid internships generate contacts and experience for a resume. *THANK YOU*

A big Thank You to Patsy Sampson of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science for hosting this meeting in Building 38 (home to her department). The conference room itself, by the way, turned out to be a museum of sorts, complete with a part of the original Whirlwind computer and archival photos of faculty groups from earlier years.

*Next Meeting*

The next meeting of MIT Editors' Club is on Tuesday, May 11, from 12-1 in W98-302 (Resource Development). We'll take a break for the summer, then resume meetings in September.

Cheers!

Elizabeth
