[Editors] Sci Fi Channel query

Hi Everybody,

I've got another interesting query for you.

I talked yesterday with Rob Swartz, a producer with the Sci Fi
Channel. He's interested in developing a new series for the channel
that, in my words, is kind of like "true-life sci-fi." In other
words, he's looking to do a program on research today that is so
cutting edge that it almost feels like science fiction.

Any ideas? I have several (Paul Rivenberg, Eve Downing: expect a note
from me!), but thought, as always, that you might have other
suggestions.

A note: this series does not yet exist. Rob is simply looking into
whether it could be feasible. He would like to come to MIT the end of
the first week in December to meet with researchers.

Cheers,

Elizabeth

>Elizabeth,
>I really enjoyed talking to you yesterday. Thanks for the time.
>As we discussed, I run Alternative Programming at Sci Fi Channel
>focusing primarily on reality and non-scripted series. I am looking
>to develop new series which focus on activities in the realm of
>science and technology that are so cutting edge they feel germaine
>to the Sci Fi Channel, while they are actually being done in
>prototype, trial, experiment, etc. today. We are looking for shows
>that are experiential for the participants rather than purely
>informational (like a news report.)
>
>I am looking to learn about activities at MIT that might be
>appropriate as they push the envelope of what we take for granted
>today. Then, if everybody is interested, I would like to discuss
>these topics with established television production companies to see
>if there are show ideas that can be developed. I would enjoy meeting
>whomever you think might be right at the University, and then I will
>put my learnings through the "tv show filter" to see if something
>can come of it on our air.
>
>In addition to developing series which are more experiential than
>informational, you should know that our network is the network of
>"imagination." Our tagline is "if." We don't do exploitative shows,
>rather we are looking to do shows that inspire viewers' imaginations.
>
>I look forward to talking to you soon.
