COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT, News Office, to provide comprehensive
support to media and public relations staff in fast-paced office.
Will format and proofread news releases, advisories, and e-mail
newsletters and assist with distribution to the media, MIT faculty
and staff, and the general public; assemble press kits and other
materials; track press coverage of MIT and prepare daily clip package
for distribution; maintain extensive media contacts and news release
database, keeping lists up-to-date, tracking reporters' coverage, and
researching new publications and news outlets; compile customized
press lists and maintain experts list; respond to e-mail and
telephone inquiries; serve as third backup to receptionist; provide
backup and support on major PR campaign and with logistics for MIT
events; and handle assorted clerical duties, e.g., photocopying,
collating, faxing, deliveries, etc. There will be some opportunities
for pitching the media.
REQUIREMENTS: two years' office experience; excellent interpersonal
and communications skills, including ability to interact with staff,
high-level faculty, and the media; excellent writing skills; good
spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills; and ability to compose
various types of basic business communications. Seek highly
organized, energetic, and motivated individual with solid office
skills and a desire to learn the ropes in public relations and media
relations. Should enjoy working on a variety of projects, both
independently and as part of a team in a busy office. Must be
familiar with FileMaker Pro, able to use a Macintosh computer, and
fluent with e-mail and the Web. Public relations, media relations,
and/or communications experience a major plus. Bachelor's degree
preferred. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
