[Editors] hard returns in eudora

Hi Scott,

I used to manage mass marketing emails for the Alumni Association, and
although I no longer do, I can tell you a little about our system last year.

First, we outsource our emails to a company that is able to send multipart
messages. Sending "multipart" means that we send out one type of email to
everyone, and the package contains both a "text/HTML" and "text/plain"
version within it. It is then the responsibility of the recipient's email
program to display the version it can handle.

Secondly, the standard width for line length in terminal windows (which do
not display images) is 80 characters. It is important to go by the number
of characters, and not their widths in a particular font, because viewers
such as terminal windows use monospace type and will make every line longer
than in a pretty font:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

We use 72 as our max length, just to be safe. I think the idea of 80 being
a safe width is pretty standard, the same way it is safe to design Web
pages at 600px or whatever the standard is now.
