[Editors] Online Photographic Image Library

To members of the Information Group, Writers and Editors at MIT, 
Administrative Officers and others involved in communications at MIT:

Dear colleagues,

The Publishing Services Bureau (PSB) currently maintains an online 
photographic image library for use in print and electronic 
communications and is exploring the feasibility of creating a 
centralized digital image library for use by communicators and 
publishers throughout the Institute. I am writing to ask for your 
help in this project. The idea would be to create a large 'public' 
collection of digital images to which individual departments could 
contribute and from which they could draw for their communications 
projects.

A central repository of digital images could have enormous benefits 
to MIT publishers. If properly indexed, finding appropriate images 
for your projects could become much easier, and sharing images could 
save money and time by eliminating unnecessary searching or photo 
shoots.

To help create the best system for a central digital image library, 
the PSB has created a brief survey, found at the URL at the bottom of 
this message, and would very much appreciate your taking a few 
minutes to complete it. The survey results will be very helpful in 
determining how many people are interested in such a resource, either 
as a contributor, a user, or both, as well as what features would be 
most desirable. Individual responders will not be identified. The 
deadline for survey responses is June 14, 2004.

After the survey returns are in, the PSB plans to gather together a 
group to provide further input into the planning, creation and 
management of the system. If you are interested in participating in 
such a group, please check yes where indicated in the survey and 
someone from the PSB will contact you.
