CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--On Thursday, December 16, 2004, the MIT Sea Grant College Program will host a public hearing at MIT to discuss the wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound. The last of four hearings on the Cape Wind Energy Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), the event is free and open to the public.

The Cape Wind project-the first offshore wind park in the United States-would be built on Horseshoe Shoal, five miles off the Cape Cod shore in Massachusetts. The proposed 130 wind turbines would be up to 420 feet high, with approximately 260 feet above the water's surface. The project aims to produce up to 420 megawatts of clean, renewable energy -enough to power three-quarters of the Cape and Islands.

The Army Corps of Engineers led a review process of Cape Wind's plan and has recently completed a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The four hearings are being held to gather feedback on the DEIS. The Corps of Engineers will consider all comments received before completing its final EIS in mid-2005.

The December 16 hearing will be held in Room 10-250 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Registration will begin at 6pm; the hearing will take place from 7-11pm. For directions, parking details, and more information, please see web address above.
