MIT EDITORS' CLUB
*Meeting Notes from September 25, 2003*
Do *you* know what a tomatilla is? Neither did many of the editors at
this meeting, but all became acquainted with the fruit--and tasted
some--during the course of this meeting. That's because a certain
Chair of this Group grew the things this year as a "garden
experiment," discovering that a family of four needs only one
tomatilla plant--not five.
Ah, how this group can digress....
*Nancy & Terry's Newsletter*
Nancy Stauffer and Terry Hill of the Laboratory for Energy and the
Environment (LFEE) are still looking for a good name for their lab's
new newsletter (my suggestion heads this section). It's difficult,
Nancy explained, because the new name should reflect the entire lab,
and LFEE brings together so many different groups of researchers
doing such a range of research. If you have any suggestions, send
them to Nancy at stauffer at mit.edu. In the meantime, she shares a name
suggested by a researcher who made her promise not to give his/her
name: "What's it all About, LFEE?"
*Finding Stories*
How do *you* get newsworthy stories from researchers? That was
another topic of discussion. Among the suggestions proffered:
--Send notes to individual professors inquiring about newsworthy
research/events in their labs, and c/c an ADDITIONAL person that's
key to the professor's group, e.g., a lab manager, administrative
officer, or grad student. Sometimes those folks will think of things
the professor doesn't.
--Ask grad students about research results and upcoming papers.
*MIT Budget Concerns*
Susan Curran of the MIT Home Page reminded Editors of a web site*
addressing this situation. It's at web.mit.edu/finances. Arthur
Jones, director of the News Office, noted that the site contains a
FAQ that should answer most questions about the situation. Susan
noted, too, that the site includes a feedback form for additional
questions, and suggestions.
Most Sincerely,
Elizabeth
