We plan to make Adium 0.89.1 for Mac OS X and Gaim 1.5.0 for Windows available to the MIT community by the end of June. These installers will be fully supported by the MIT Computing Help Desk, and will be posted on the MIT Software download page (http://web.mit.edu/software/). The clients will also be part of the recommended suite of core applications for incoming students this Fall. Linux users already have access to Gaim as part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and we will be announcing support for that client alongside the Mac and Windows counterparts. Jabber is an instant messaging protocol similar to those offered by AOL, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. IS&T?s Jabber service lets MIT users communicate with one another and with Jabber users at other universities and elsewhere on the Internet. It also supports the creation and joining of chat rooms for group communication. Use of the MIT namespace (username at mit.edu) makes it easier to identify screen names of community members. Jabber at MIT is an evolving service, and feedback is very welcome. Please email comments and suggestions to wocky-release at mit.edu. Community feedback will be instrumental in determining the future course of Jabber usage at MIT. For more information about the Jabber client release effort, please visit the release notebook: http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/jabber/ You can also get more information about the Jabber pilot and download the current Beta installers at the Jabber pilot project page: http://web.mit.edu/ist/services/messaging/jabber.html If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact the release team via email at wocky-release at mit.edu. For more complete details, please see: http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/email/eudora-retire.html The retirement of support means that IS&T will not release new customized Eudora installers, will not test Eudora on upcoming operating systems, like Windows Vista, and over time knowledge about troubleshooting Eudora problems will degrade. We will be moving the current Eudora installers on the MIT Software Download site to the Archive pages. If you need to access these installers going forward, you can find them by clicking on the Archive link at the bottom of the pages. We understand that many departments, labs and centers have already migrated off of Eudora and that many others have plans to do so this summer. Assistance in migrating to the supported email applications of Outlook Express, Outlook 2003 and Apple Mail is available from IS&T in the form of onsite help, training courses, documentation and walk-in service. Links to the various services and instructions are available at: http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/email/migration.html This announcement will also appear in the upcoming issue of the IS&T Newsletter. Thank you, Jon p.s. This message was also sent to itpartners at mit.edu, macpartners at mit.edu, winpartners at mit.edu and is&t at mit.edu. ___________________________________________________ Jonathan McIndoe Hunt MIT EECS '97 617.253.0172 Manager Software Services Client Support Services Information Services & Technology, MIT http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/software/ From bowser at MIT.EDU Thu Jun 29 13:47:10 2006 From: bowser at MIT.EDU (Deb Bowser) Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 13:47:10 -0400 Subject: [edtech] IS&T Software Update for June 2006 Message-ID: <200606291747.k5THlGov010552@outgoing.mit.edu> Date: Thursday, June 29, 2006 To: Members of the MIT Community: itpartners at mit.edu, macpartners at mit.edu, winpartners at mit.edu, sw-release announce at mit.edu, ed-tech at mit.edu, linux-help at mit.edu From: Software Release Team Subj: IS&T Software Update for June 2006 Cc: is&t at mit.edu, itag at mit.edu, it-lead at mit.edu This monthly communication is intended for Faculty, Staff and Students within the MIT Community, to provide updated information regarding new and upcoming software products and services.
