Volume Site License Software Update --------------------------------------------------------- Dreamweaver 7 and Maple 10 will be ready next week for distribution to students. We are working with IS&T Academic Computing to evaluate the ongoing software distribution model for academic packages like Maple and Mathematica to better understand the value and how we can fund such licenses in the future with reduced resources. We are also looking at packages that have less direct academic application like Dreamweaver which we have provided free to students in the past, but may need to charge a nominal fee next academic year (2006-2007). To view the available licenses including Dreamweaver and Maple, start at http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/vsls/. 4. Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- We recommend users configure their Windows machines to use MIT's Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS) for critical patches and service pack deployment. IN STATA CENTER] Message-ID: <1127159235.24616.77.camel@arizona.mit.edu> FYI: -------- Forwarded Message -------- MIT COMMUNICATIONS FORUM the future of the digital commons Thursday, September 22, 2005 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. 32-155 (Stata Center) Speakers: Nancy Kranish, former President, American Library Assn Ann Wolpert, Director, MIT Libraries Respondent: Steven Pinker, Harvard University Arguments and legal confrontations over the control of music, writing and visual materials have become a permanent feature of contemporary life and will almost certainly enlarge and intensify in future years. As corporate producers and distributors ? including some universities and private libraries ? move aggressively to claim ownership of digital content of all kinds and as some industries lobby for building surveillance principles into the operating systems of computers, others defend an alternative vision. This alternative embraces ideals of sharing and civic community and warns that recent extensions of copyright threaten creativity and the free exchange of ideas. Is there a future for this idea of a digital commons? Is the American tradition of free public libraries a valuable precedent for the digital age? Is the commercialization of cyberspace already a problem for those seeking reliable information? Are there features or tendencies inherent in digital technology that will always challenge and even undermine efforts to control information or charge a fee for accessing it? Our speakers and our audience will engage these and related questions. ------------- Nancy Kranich served as president of the American Library Association in 2000-2001, focusing on the role of libraries in democracies. In 2003-2004, she was a senior research fellow at the Free Expression Policy Project in New York, where she wrote The Information Commons: A Public Policy Report . Previously, she was associate dean of libraries at New York University where she managed NYU's libraries, press, and media services. Steven Pinker is the Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. He is the author of many essays and books, including The Language Instinct (1994) and The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature (2002). Ann Wolpert is director of MIT Libraries and a member of the MIT Committee on Copyright and Patents. She also chairs the management board of the MIT Press and the board of directors of Technology Review, Inc., which publishes Technology Review. -- Jean Foster Usability Consultant/ Academic Computing Communications Coordinator MIT Information Services and Technology 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139 N42-040, jfoster at mit.edu, 617.253.3909 From jfoster at MIT.EDU Mon Sep 19 16:09:04 2005 From: jfoster at MIT.EDU (Jean Foster) Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 16:09:04 -0400 Subject: [edtech] Re: THIS WEEK: The Future of the Digital Commons on Thursday, Sept. 22, 5-7 p.m. in 32-155 (MIT's Stata Center)] Message-ID: <1127160544.24616.97.camel@arizona.mit.edu> In case you can't make this event I've just been informed that there will be a RealOne recording available afterwards at: http://web.mit.edu/comm-forum/forums/digital%20commons.htm#audiocast -jean- On Sep 19, 2005, at 9:43 AM, Heather Denny wrote: >> MIT COMMUNICATIONS FORUM >> >> the future of the digital commons >> >> Thursday, September 22, 2005 >> 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. >> 32-155 (Stata Center) >> >> Speakers: >> Nancy Kranich, former President, American Library Assn >> Ann Wolpert, Director, MIT Libraries >> >> Respondent: Steven Pinker, Harvard University >> William Reilly Technical Analyst MIT Libraries' Digital Library Research Group E25-131 77 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 U.S.A. 617 253-5716 wreilly at mit.edu Project Manager CWSpace: Archiving MIT OpenCourseWare in DSpace http://cwspace.mit.edu -- Jean Foster Usability Consultant/ Academic Computing Communications Coordinator MIT Information Services and Technology 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139 N42-040, jfoster at mit.edu, 617.253.3909 From jfoster at MIT.EDU Wed Sep 28 11:38:11 2005 From: jfoster at MIT.EDU (Jean Foster) Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 11:38:11 -0400 Subject: [edtech] [Fwd: Developers@MIT Lunchtime Presentation: Tuesday, Oct 4] Message-ID: <1127921891.24133.45.camel@arizona.mit.edu> FYI: Attend this event to find out about Sun's new Education Commons initiative and learn what it means for MIT to be named a "Center for Excellence for Interoperability" -jean- -------- Forwarded Message -------- From: Catherine T.
