Recent Releases --------------------------------------------------------- We have been working hard in preparation for school getting back in session this September. The main focus has been on testing Tiger (OS X 10.4) and on getting the latest versions of software onto the Fall Getting Connected CD. You will see in the coming weeks, several products, such as SecureCRT, SecureFX and others being released this fall. 2. Software Release Efforts Underway ------------------------------------------------------ Linux ----------- Back-to-school 2005 CD - August 2005 Macintosh ---------------- Apple Mail - Release effort underway - August 2005 Back-to-school 2005 CD - August 2005 Eudora 6.2.3 - Release effort underway - August 2005 iPassConnect 2.37 - Release effort underway - On Hold Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) - Release effort underway - August 2005 Windows ----------------- Back-to-school 2005 CD - August 2005 Eudora 6.2.3 - Release effort underway - August 2005 iPassConnect 3.30 - Release effort underway - On Hold Microsoft Anti-spyware, Beta 1, refresh 2 - evaluation in progress To obtain information on any of the release efforts listed, please visit our page: 3. Volume Site License Software Update --------------------------------------------------------- On June 22, IS&T offered licenses to our software liaisons for Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional through the maintenance program from Acrobat licenses purchased in June 2003. A web site was created, similar to that used for the Microsoft Campus Agreement that enables users to register for Acrobat Pro 7 licenses, return Acrobat Pro 6 licenses and download installation files for Windows and/or Mac OS X. On July 27, licensing was offered to others in the MIT community who participate in the maintenance program. We are experimenting with partnering with GovConnection to process Mathematica orders and collect licensing fees to improve our processing of Mathematica orders. To place an order through GovConnection, students should use the MIT Personal Catalog while Faculty and Staff should use the Departmental Catalog at GovConnection. Mathematica is now listed with the Microsoft Select and other software licensing deals special for MIT in the upper right corner of the MIT Catalog. Once your order is processed through GovConnection, VSLS will distribute the latest Mathematica media and instructions to you. More information is available by following the Mathematica link at . 4. Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- We recommend users configure their Windows machines to use MIT's Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS) for critical patches and service pack deployment. For more information about and instructions on how to configure your machines to use WAUS, see the WAUS documentation at: < http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/> 5. The IS&T Web Communication Services (WCS) group will be renamed and expanded, and begin pilot projects this fall as the IS&T Departmental Consulting and Applications Development (DCAD) group. DCAD will offer a wide array of services including consulting, development, and facilitating use of outside service providers and other IS&T services such as the Usability Lab. Jeff Reed will lead DCAD, ensuring the same high-level of service you have received under his management of WCS. Given community interest in this new service as expressed in the DDADP study, we want to make sure that our initial offerings and pricing satisfy community needs. We will depend on input from the DDADP project team (whose members have graciously agreed to serve as an initial advisory committee) to select pilot projects as we build a scaleable and robust service. We will also be working with the Information Technology Architecture Group (ITAG) to help ensure that we implement appropriate processes and service models. I want to thank the members of the DDADP team for their excellent work over the past several months. Under the leadership of Bil Huxley of IS&T, the team consisted of: Bill Barrasso, IS&T Client Support Services Cecilia Marra, DUE Academic Services Mike Sherman, Dept. of Facilities Craig Thomas, Libraries Dave Woodruff, Laboratory for Nuclear Science The DDADP team obtained input via a widely distributed web-based survey and through focus group meetings with community members. The scope of the team's work encompassed community interest in products such as FileMaker, Access, and PHP/MySQL. The team then developed recommendations about processes and support activities for a new service offering. The DDADP final report is available at: http://web.mit.edu/ist/org/admincomputing/notebooks/DDADP/ As we move forward with the implementation of this new service, please provide your comments and suggestions to Jeff Reed or to any DDADP team member. We look forward to expanding DCAD's pilot efforts based on your input and demand for its services. Jerry Grochow _______________________________________________ Jerrold M. Tiger provides many new features, including Spotlight, Dashboard, Automator, QuickTime 7, Safari RSS and many more. See http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/ for more information. Information Services and Technology recommends that administrative users, especially those that depend on SAPgui for Mac OS X should not upgrade to Tiger at this time. No version of SAPgui functions properly on Tiger currently--some transactions don't work or can cause SAPgui to crash or corrupt data. We are optimistic that Apple will release an operating system update that will enable a new version of SAPgui to run on Mac OS X 10.4 within 30 days. Some SAP users can use SAPweb or Citrix (to access the Windows version of SAP) until the updated version of SAPgui is available; please see the Mac OS X release notebook (http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/macosx10.4/) for additional information and known issues. In addition, departments, labs and centers that rely on Kerberos authentication at login or OpenAFS should not upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 at this time, as these applications and features don't currently work and we don't have a timeframe when they will. Obtaining Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" ------------------------------- Confirm the Macintosh you wish to install Mac OS X 10.4 on is eligible to be upgraded. In order to provide the most value to MIT, we suggest that you only request licenses for machines that are expected to be used through FY2006 and meet the following hardware requirements: * A Macintosh desktop with a 800 MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor * A Macintosh laptop with a 800 MHz or faster PowerPC G4 processor * at least 512 MB RAM * 3GB of available hard disk space (4GB if you install the developer tools) These licenses are for use on MIT-owned equipment only--personally owned machines are not eligible. Users wishing to upgrade their machines should first check with the software liaison in their department regarding obtaining a license and installation media for Tiger. The list of liaisons is located at http://web.mit.edu/ist/services/software/msca-osliaisons.html. Users also have the option to request licenses, download ISO disk images from the new Mac OS X order site at http://macosx.mit.edu/ from which installation media can be created. Note: the first installation CD must be created on a Macintosh using Apple's Disk Utility program so that it boots, which is required to install Tiger. We have a limited number of OS X 10.3 "Panther" licenses available for faculty and staff who need to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.2 but are not ready to upgrade to Tiger. To request a license and media, please contact . Upgrading --------- Apple provides step-by-step directions on upgrading from a previous version for Mac OS X to Tiger at http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/. IS&T strongly recommends users make a complete backup of their hard drives before attempting to upgrade. Getting Help ------------ The Mac OS X 10.4 page is located at http://itinfo.mit.edu/product.php?vid=686. If you have a question or need assistance, please contact the Computing Help Desk at computing-help at mit.edu or x3-1101. Support from the Computing Help Desk consists of assistance for getting connected to MITnet and basic configuration issues.
