Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) contains major security improvements designed to provide better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms. While recognizing the security benefits of Windows XP SP2, we recommend that system administrators test XP SP2 in their environment before deploying to all Windows XP machines within a department. Unlike previous Service Packs, Microsoft will deploy XP SP2 via Microsoft's Automatic Update service. Machines configured to use Microsoft Automatic Update will start to receive XP SP2 on Monday, August 16 unless preventative measures are taken. For more information on ways to prevent SP2 from automatically installing on Monday, see: http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/whattodosp2.html Machines configured to use MIT's Windows Automatic Update (WAUS) will not receive the service pack on Monday, August 16. Based on testing and feedback from the community, SP2 will be made available through the WAUS at a later date. If MIT testers of XP SP2 report serious problems, the release via WAUS will be delayed. However, based on our current knowledge we do not anticipate a long delay. If you do not have local IT support, we recommend that you configure your machine to use WAUS, and therefore take the update after testing has concluded. To configure a machine to use WAUS, follow the instructions at: http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/ Known Issues -------------------------------- While our testing to date of SP2 has been very positive, it does make very major changes and could cause unforeseen problems. Many vendors have already released new or updated versions of their products to ensure compatibility with this new service pack. If you encounter any problems with an application while testing XP SP2, you should attempt to determine if your vendor has provided a solution or a free upgrade from their web site. We will maintain information regarding MIT's supported suite of applications and their compatibility with SP2 on the release notebook. Testing -------------------------------- IS&T tested earlier versions (betas) of the service pack to ensure that MIT services and software functioned properly with all parts SP2 including the Windows Firewall. Our testing with the pre-released versions did not indicate any major problems, contrary to what was reported by various news agencies. To the best of our current knowledge all of our supported applications should work with Windows XP SP2. Testing with the final release continues at this time. Currently we have encountered no insurmountable problems. In the meantime, we recommend that you not install SP2 on production machines until we make our recommendations or you are able to test your critical applications in a test environment. The latest information on SP2 testing at MIT, including any ongoing bugs, can be found in the release notebook at: http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/ If you are testing SP2, we would appreciate hearing from you regarding your experience with SP2, both problems encountered as well as successful application and service usages so that we can share information broadly. You can contact the release team with questions or feedback at winxp-release at mit.edu. As we announced last week, Microsoft released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP on Monday, August 9, 2004 to the general public. Since then, we have received information informing us that Microsoft has altered their delivery schedule through Automatic Update. Machines configured to use Automatic Update will not start receiving Windows XP SP2 until Wednesday, August 25 - at the earliest - as long as those machines are running Windows XP Professional Edition. A more complete schedule of Microsoft's timing for SP2 delivery is available on: Machines configured to use MIT's Windows Automatic Update (WAUS) will not receive the service pack until testing of SP2 at MIT has been completed and major problems resolved. Based on testing and feedback from the community, SP2 will be made available through the WAUS at a later date. If MIT testers of XP SP2 report serious problems, the release via WAUS will be delayed. However, based on our current knowledge we do not anticipate a long delay. For more information on ways to prevent SP2 from automatically installing beginning next week, see: http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/whattodosp2.html If you do not have local IT support, we recommend that you configure your machine to use WAUS, and therefore take the update after testing has concluded. To configure a machine to use WAUS, follow the instructions at: http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/windows/updates/ Microsoft has reported a potential problem with Outlook 2003 in which messages don't send immediately - work around is available from Microsoft. However, we have not been able to reproduce this particular problem with the MIT mail system. We have observed very few problems with SP2 in our testing and have only had a few reports of problems from others testing SP2 at MIT. The major issues to date are: Reports from our colleagues around campus of products not centrally supported include: - Symantec Ghost Corporate requires ports opened in the firewall - solution from Symantec's site - OpenAFS versions prior to 1.3.70 breaks with SP2 - upgrade before applying SP2 (WIN.MIT.EDU machines running Pismere 4.1.1 are not effected by the OpenAFS problem) These and any additional issues that we hear about will be posted on the Release Notebook at: http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/win-xp-sp2/ If you are testing XP SP2 within a test environment, we would appreciate hearing from you regarding your experiences, both problems encountered as well as successful application and service usages so that we can share the information broadly. Please send e-mail with test results or questions to winxp-release at mit.edu. We anticipate this transition period to Windows XP Professional to occur throughout the Fall months. This reminder is based on a series of communications and outreach while retiring an Operating System, which requires adequate planning, resources and lead time. We are prepared to work with the MIT community in an effort to help ease the difficulties in migrating to a more current environment. After an extensive review of industry trends, strategic plans for institute computing, and evolving security needs, we identified the following factors that led to the decision to retire support for Windows 2000: - Mainstream support from Microsoft will end on March 31, 2005 - Windows XP became available in October of 2001 - Retirement of this OS has been underway across the industry and we are in step with the vendors. - FY2005 Administrative Computing Desktop Environment Recommendations - All PC based computers sold since November 2001, have had Windows XP factory-set as the default operating system. - Windows XP licensed upgrades can be purchased through GovConnection . Keeping pace with current Operating Systems and applications benefits everyone. If you are running an aging operating system on equipment with sufficient specifications to run the latest operating system, then we will help you make the upgrade. Any workstations targeted for replacement during the fiscal year need not be upgraded. Whatever the nature of the assistance you require, please don't hesitate to contact us: Software Release Team, . We will do our best to direct you to those who can best handle your specific needs. Additional information to consider while making the transition to Windows XP is available: . These initiatives align with that goal, and we hope you take advantage of resources available to help you. In closing, our thanks to all IT-Partners who assisted in reviewing vendor requirements necessary to set this operating system retirement and planning your department's upgrade strategies. Should you have any questions, send e-mail to the Software Release team . Please feel free to share this announcement with colleagues who may be interested. This message is intended to help bring you up to date on these changes to our space and on our efforts to create for you a combined service center. Beginning Tuesday, August 17, you will find all services previously available in the basement of W20 now available in building N42 located at 211 Massachusetts Avenue. As part of a strategic effort to provide a common 'front-door' to IS&T services and to offer a set of integrated services to the community, IS&T is establishing a combined service center in the front area of Building N42. In this combined service center, clients will be able to: - Meet with IS&T consultants for hardware and software repair; these are the functions performed by PC Repair and Computing Help Walk-in Services - Look at demonstration models and discuss new computer purchases with consultants; the functions performed by the MIT Computer Connection. - Take care of computing account activities such as password re-sets. - Pick up requested copies of volume licensed software. - Receive directions and contacts for other IS&T activities, meetings, and consultations. Contact information for the groups who are relocating, including email remain the same, and directory and service information on our web pages are in the process of being updated. Other IS&T activities are also being relocated from W20; for example, the Online Consultants for Athena help and Athena Cluster Services are also moving to N42. Finally, I wish to ask for your patience as we settle into this new arrangement; construction will not be fully complete before the beginning of fall term, and we are working to insure that we present a coherent set of combined services that each staff member can deliver to our clients. As with any change, there will be some surprises, and we appreciate your understanding and welcome your feedback. If you wish to know more, or have questions, please don't hesitate to call me. We look forward to this new approach for delivering these IS&T services. Digging Deeper: Course 8.224 --------------------------------------------------------------- Can I see a black hole at all? If I can see it, what does a black hole look like? Does it look black? What does it feel like to fall toward a black hole? Each month, this newsletter offers subscribers an in-depth guide to one particular subject, and this month, we delve into Professors Edmund Berthschinger and Edwin Taylor's Course 8.224 -- Exploring Black Holes: General Relativity and Astrophysics, from MIT's Department of Physics. Professor Bertschinger is a theoretical astrophysicist who serves as head of MIT's Division of Astrophysics. His research is focused in cosmology and relativistic astrophysics, and Exploring Black Holes is one of three courses available from Professor Bertschinger on MIT OCW, the other two being Course 8.942 -- Cosmology and Course 8.962 -- General Relativity. Professor Taylor is a Senior Research Scientist Emeritus at MIT. Course 8.224 investigates the questions of the cosmos using elementary calculus. The course homepage features a beautiful image taken by the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory, as presented on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day Web site. The course site includes Assignments, Exams, and a description of the end-of-term collaborative research project that MIT students enrolled in the course must complete. The Lecture Notes for this course include slides, PDFs, and/or videos for each of the seminar sessions, covering topics such as "The Universe: Questions You Were Afraid to Ask," "Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of Our Galaxy -- Sagittarius A*," and "Cosmic Structure Formation: From Inflation to Galaxies." MIT OCW users are advised to check out MIT Professor Robert Jaffe's Course 8.20 -- Introduction to Special Relativity as a prerequisite for Course 8.224. Professor Jaffe's MIT OCW Web site introduces users to the basic ideas and equations of Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, and will help them to better understand the subject matter of Exploring Black Holes. 4.
